Summary

December, 1889.

There have been many bad days in Edinburgh police's secret subdivision 'The Commission for the Elucidation of Unsolved Cases Presumably Related to the Odd and Ghostly'.

But today is surely the worst.

Because the exiled English Inspector Ian Frey, and his Scottish boss 'Nine-Nails' McGray are summoned to a meeting in the middle of the night with the Prime Minister himself.

And he tells them that Queen Victoria - the most powerful person in the world - wants them both dead.

To be pardoned they must embark on a mission so dangerous that they might be saving Her Majesty the job of executing them. Because this case ties together the dark history of the Pendle witches, with the tragic case of McGray own sister, to a conspiracy within the highest office in the land...

Fabulous

I absolutely love this series. Witty, fast paced and quite mad. The narration is beyond excellent.

Absolutely brilliant.

I have loved all the Frey and McGray books. I have listened to them all straight after each other which is a first for me.

They are funny, gory, exciting, surprising - sometimes sad - and just brilliant. I have actually said 'OH NO' out loud when I've been listening! Narration by Andy Secombe is second to none, he truly brings the characters to life and has made them real for me. The banter between 'Percy' and Nine Nails is superb. Oscar de Muriel has researched and woven fantastic stories around historic events which is a real skill.

I think it is best to listen to the books in order, they are such fun, but details about past events are brought into the later books so it's not crucial to buy them all.

I am going to miss the characters being part of my day and can't wait for Oscar de Muriel to write the next one!!!

Fantastic

This has got to be my favourite. Suspense the whole way through. Finished it in two days as so desperate to find out what happened next.

Another anarchic trip through Victorian Britain

As with the previous Frey and McGray outings this was a thoroughly enjoyable historical romp. Fantastic to have them back and as such I devoured this recording at great speed.
I don’t feel that the premise for the story was as strong as previous adventures and at times even the amazing narration Andy Secombe was a little off. But I’m splitting hairs. It was great fun and I hope there are more to come.
