Summary

The audio edition includes clips from documentary material and interviews gathered by the author during her time spent travelling and living with various cults across America.

Devastatingly moving, brilliantly inspiring and utterly unforgettable, Cult Following is a searing memoir of survival, love and transformation.

Bexy Cameron was in her late 20s then the dark events of her past finally caught up with her.

Bexy was born into the Children of God, one of the world's most notorious cults. She was nine years old when she experienced her first exorcism, held in a secret commune deep in the British countryside. At 10, she was placed on Silence Restriction, forced to be silent for a whole year. Even from an early age, she knew what was happening was not right. At the age of 15, she escaped, leaving behind her parents and 11 siblings.

Haunted by her past, Bexy set off on a road trip across America, embedding herself in the underbelly of religious cults, living with children who, like her, are born into the worlds their parents and cult leaders have created for them.

It is a journey of meth cooks, monks, Jesus Freaks, soap-making Armageddonists, surveillance vans and finally, confronting her parents and herself.

Amazing

Beautifully written despite the sometimes harrowing subject matter. What a wonderful, well rounded woman Bexy is, such resilience!

Thank you

Not sure how you did this, it was as interesting as a well written novel, but authentic, simultaneously. I’m an ex family member (born into it) from London. I spoke to my Mum about this book, she then told me it was our Dad who witnessed to your parents in Bromley… and got them into the cult. He’s dead now, but I felt a strong need to apologise for him, for taking your parents into such a shit show. I’m one of 13 children and it’s heartbreaking to know how many children suffered, and their parents did nothing. You made my past seem almost cool and glamorous through your writing, but I’ve always tried to forget about it like a mad dream from eating too much cheese before bed. I enjoyed it, and I felt like you were writing parts of me, but much much cooler. Thanks.

Heartbreaking, beautiful and fascinating

What a beautifully written and gripping story. I was enthralled from start to finish. Normally I do not like it when the author also narrates the books, but Bexy’s reading style is perfect!

One All Encompassing Listen

Hard to fathom why any parent would allow Children to be treated in this way.

Are Cults bad?

One thing you can say at the end, is Bexy Cameron is one brave, strong and open Human being

A fucked up road trip

I hate to say entertaining but although the story is dark there's a humour and realness to this help as it's narrator is also the author. loved this book I hope there may be more from Bexy Cameron one day.

Disappointing

I was really looking forward to this book. But for me, the continual jumping around in time made it impossible to follow. I have no idea what happened when and no energy to go back and work it out. What is wrong with telling a story chronologically? And Audible do need someone to listen to and check recordings. The word 'agape' in the context of religion is not pronounced the same as when you're referring to a baby bird's beak.

A heart rendering cathartic journey about growth and authenticity

I really enjoyed listening to Bexy both as a narrator with her silky voice and ruffled edges. Her writing is exquisite, the attention to details were interesting and illuminated the overall autobiography. I appreciated the multi faceted layers and switching between childhood and present encompassing a psychological perspective running through the narrative . I am amazed how well she’s flourished and her strength and bravery to find herself, be herself and share her fascinating story. Very inspiring.
I would especially recommend to anyone who has had a traumatic childhood.

I couldn’t stop listening, a brave and heroic account of her story, I didn’t want it to end.
