Summary

**Shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize 2023**

**Chosen as a book to watch out for in 2023 by The Times, Observer, Guardian, Irish Times and Scotsman**

'It’s a testament to the cast of five that they manage to unite these apparently disparate elements. The effect as each story gives way to the next is one of history ebbing and flowing, of individuals united by place and past.' FINANCIAL TIMES

‘A sensational piece of storytelling … A singular and significant achievement’ GUARDIAN

‘Marvellous, artful, enchanted’ DAILY TELEGRAPH

'Cements Myers’s standing as one of our finest, and most deftly imaginative, writers' I NEWS

The triumphant new novel from the Walter Scott Prize-winning author of The Gallows Pole and The Offing

Cuddy is a bold and experimental retelling of the story of the hermit St. Cuthbert, unofficial patron saint of the North of England. Incorporating poetry, prose, play, diary and real historical accounts to create a novel like no other, Cuddy straddles historical eras - from the first Christian-slaying Viking invaders of the holy island of Lindisfarne in the 8th century to a contemporary England defined by class and austerity.

Along the way we meet brewers and masons, archers and academics, monks and labourers, their visionary voices and stories echoing through their ancestors and down the ages.

And all the while at the centre sits Durham Cathedral and the lives of those who live and work around this place of pilgrimage – their dreams, desires, connections and communities.

Benjamin Myers at his best!

I initially struggled to get into the story (the constant credits/references were annoying), but once past this it was a wonderful story across several centuries with fantastic and passionate natation throughout!!

Craftsmanship in a book

Cuddy: Benjamin Myers. The talent of this author impresses me with each of his books. Cuddy, in each of its phases, had my attention at all times & delivers page after page of excellent word craftsmanship. I've lived my life in Durham and Cuddy has inspired me to appreciate it all the more. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Beautiful stories

Beautiful stories, beautifully told by North Eastern narrators, charting the story of the patron saint of North East England and his profound effect on the culture of our region.

This book made me want to be a Stonemason

Another tremendous book from Benjamin Myers who seems so effortlessly to transport me to another time, another place and perhaps, another plane. Beautifully narrated too.

Be patient with the lists of references

This is a brilliant book - Myers is easily my favourite author and this doesn’t disappoint. Being a born and bred southerner, I knew nothing of Cuthbert and his significance in the history of the north of England, so to have this story brought to life in such an emotional, poetic and real way was just such a treat. Loved all the characters

voice actors getting the correct Northern accent made the text sing!

The Historian E R Carrs notion of 'history being a dialogue between the past and the present' ran through the the book supremely.

Underwhelmed

Really wanted to like this, sadly couldn't get absorbed, found some of the narration unclear and jarring. I might go back and give it a second chance sometime.
