Summary

Cristo si è fermato a Eboli' è l'opera più celebre di Carlo Levi. Scritta tra il 1943 e il 1944, durante la sua militanza nel Comitato di Liberazione Nazionale, viene pubblicata nel 1945, a guerra ormai conclusa. Confinato nel 1935 dal regime fascista ad Aliano, uno sperduto paesino della Basilicata, lo scrittore e pittore scopre un mondo fino a quel momento sconosciuto. Un mondo escluso e dimenticato, 'quell'altro mondo, serrato nel dolore e negli usi, negato alla Storia e allo Stato, eternamente paziente'. Eboli è il paese dove la strada e la ferrovia si interrompono e cedono il passo alle terre aride e desolate della Lucania. Terre nelle quali la popolazione vive in condizioni di ingiustizia, miseria e arretratezza, e nelle quali lo Stato e le sue istituzioni non esistono. Una realtà che sembra precedente alla storia e alla civiltà, ma che si trova comunque a subirne la presenza: 'Noi non siamo cristiani, non siamo uomini… dobbiamo invece subire il mondo dei cristiani, che sono di là dall'orizzonte, e sopportarne il peso e il confronto'. La partecipazione alla vita dei paesani, con i quali intesse rapporti di rispetto e amicizia, e la diretta esperienza della distanza dello Stato e dell'alterità di questo mondo conducono Levi a ritrarre l'aspra realtà dell'Italia meridionale attraverso la commistione di diversi generi letterari, ma soprattutto a scoprire il problema meridionale non solo come episodio di una condizione arcaica, intollerabile nella nostra società, ma anche come teatro di una straordinaria civiltà contadina. Secondo Italo Calvino 'la peculiarità di Carlo Levi sta in questo: che egli è il testimone della presenza di un altro tempo all'interno del nostro tempo, è l'ambasciatore d'un altro mondo all'interno del nostro mondo'. L'opera incontra subito un grande successo di pubblico e di critica, viene tradotta in numerosi paesi e adattata per il cinema in un omonimo film del 1979 diretto da Francesco Rosi e interpretato da Gian Maria Volontè. La lettura è affidata all'attore Massimo Malucelli.

Classic of post-war Italian literature

This is a classic, which means that it is dull in parts, but worth the effort.
It is a unique document of the poor south of Italy before WWII and of the use of internal exile by the Fascists as a means of punishing those who opposed them.
It is set in 1935-36, so the Fascists had another 7 years to go before the armistice of 8th September 1943. Carlo Levi survived and lived to old age.

Finalmente!

Mi fu imposta la lettura alla scuola media e non finimmo il libro, che trovai noioso! Dopo moltissimi anni mi sono accinta ad ascoltarlo: un capolavoro! Sono felice di averlo apprezzato e mi ha aperto gli occhi! Stupendo, un classico moderno! Lo consiglio vivamente: la lettura di Malucelli è bellissima!
