About this listen
In the desolate hills of the Fascelli family ranch, a skeleton has been discovered. The sheriff needs Du Pre's long experience in Montana to identify the bones. What Du Pre finds leads him on a search through the history of a troubled family, a search that brings him closer to a secret from his own past. Along the way, Du Pre meets a range of interesting folk, some to his liking, some decidedly not.

An excellent story with perfect narration
I have never read or listened to this author before but can’t wait to try the next in the series. The story was intriguing and unhurried. It unfolded in a very satisfying manner. The characters were varied and well rounded. I loved hearing what Gabriel Du Pré was thinking as well as what he was saying during his interactions with others. They often made me smile. “I don’t understand my women “ was a common refrain.
I enjoyed the cultural references too. They were an interesting and integral part of the story and didn’t feel as if they were merely issues that the author wanted to push.
I laughed out loud throughout one of the later chapters during which a major purchase was made by an acquaintance of Gabriel’s. He reminded me so much of my husband! For those old enough to remember the Tales of the Riverbank TV series, think of Mr Toad of Toad Hall.
The narrator was superb.
I recommend it highly.

Interesting, engaging, addictive - SUPERB
This review comes after I have listened to all 15 Du Pré books. Peter Bowen has created a central character and a host of associated characters that are very 'real', their humanity and frailty mean that as a reader you care, so often lacking in current storytelling.
The author informs about a location and people and their history that I had no knowledge of until I listened to these stories. Yet he doesn't lecture, the information is disseminated interwoven in the narrative. It's very clever. He creates an imagery of Montana so wonderfully that I can see it in my mind.
There are two narrators used for these books, usually that is a problem but not in this instance both are equally good and somehow manage to capture very similar voices for the main characters so there is no jarring.
I am addicted to these people and place and I suspect I will go back to listening to them from the beginning very soon, not something I do with most stories.

Recommended...
An unexpectedly literary treasure. Not only a great story, flawlessly narrated, but a really beautifully written little gem. Absolutely delighted to discover, after finishing this short novella, that there's still another 14 completely free volumes in the series (although strangely book 14 costs a credit !
Really looking forward to spending almost another 100+ hours in company of these fantastic, fascinating and wonderfully well-rounded and realistic characters, in the magical setting of Montana... Fantastic and highly recommended use of anyone's time.

this is a good story but the narrator annoyed me the whole way through, he pronounced the man's name wrong.

Dreary
Just couldn't get on with the narration, didnt like the accents. It was dull and dreary which did nothing for a dull and dreary story. Gave up at 6 chapters.
