Summary

The brilliantly entertaining and heartwarming books behind the hit '90s TV series Heartbeat. One of the top 10 most watched shows of the decade.

Policeman Nick Rhea has been posted to the country with his wife, Mary, and their three small children. They move into the police house, high on a ridge overlooking the moors. It sits on the edge of the village of Aidensfield - 'probably the most beautiful site in the country'. In the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside of the 1960s, Constable Nick's roles are as varied as the eccentric villagers. He handles every encounter with his characteristic humour, humanity and professionalism. His investigations include the case of a clever pony who keeps escaping, a woman running through town naked and a pack of Canadian timber wolves hanging out in a bus shelter.

Critic reviews

"It’s original, it’s funny...one of life’s little pleasures.” (Yorkshire Post

“Stories of a constable on his village beat in North Yorkshire. All very gentle and far, far removed from the hurly burly of modern day city policing.” (Daily Telegraph

Charming

I didn’t expect to enjoy this, but I was pulled into its warmth. There is no driving narrative, but a series of episodes. It’s full of humanity and community, giving a glimpse of a way of life now forgotten.

Rather dull

This is not to my taste. The TV series gave a different impression. Rather disjointed set of stories - nothing offensive but nothing impressive either in my view. I’m a fan of Miss Read books which have more of a storyline - I was hoping for something similar but this is more like a series of brief events. Not very humorous either. I also found repeated negative comments about “Socialists” distasteful frankly. If I could get my credit back, I would.

A gentle and very enjoyable tale. Well narrated with smiles and laughter along the way.

Pleasant but drifted away

I really liked it but there is no action and I found myself drifting away from the story.

Days gone by

“Heartbeat” in written and narrated form. I enjoyed it far more than the television adaptation. Set in the days of bobbies on the beat in small communities where for some life was hard but the togetherness of these villages and the inhabitants helped out as best they could. Of course the local pubs were the heart of entertainment and religion of all persuasions tried to keep their flocks on the straight and narrow! All in all a very enjoyable and memory provoking listen.

Amazing book

I have listened to this twice so far. Both times very enjoyable. I have listened to the whole constable series. Brilliant.
