About this listen

When a young boy and his father, a master gunner, leave their home in Devon they cannot know that piracy will become their life, for a while, at least. Set in the early days of the Spanish conquest of the Americas and with a young King Henry on the throne of England, this is a novel of discovery and riches, slavery and death. It is a time of innovation when guns changed from being firing tubes to cannons that could bring death and destruction. Above all, it is the story of a youth who, against the odds, becomes a man and, more, becomes a master gunner in his own right.

This is the first part of a series that will culminate in the heights of the Andes where the power of the Spanish comes up against the Incas in their mountain eyries.

Quick and fun.

The tempo in time and storytelling has its advantages and disadvantages. The fast time skips take out much of the mundane day-to-day telling of life, but also makes it seem to move too fast. It also saves room for the more hectic and dramatic parts of the book.
Not really any explanation of the life the character is living when on the move. This does help not making it slow down too much with boring details. But some would help. To make the reader feel like he is there with the character.
Lots of exciting action, famous historical figures, and likable characters. A lot of the likable ones seem like the same guy with different wigs, but it works for the story.
Like another comment I feel they missed out on South American culture and beauty seen through the eyes of an Englishman, missing a huge opportunity. But was a fun read, and I’m gonna buy the sequel eventually.

Just good

Well written story well told and believable (comfortable because you know the hero can’t die , that would mean the end of the story) will probably get the following book.

Sadly dissapointed

I was excited about a historical fiction series based around the conquistadors but I was a little dissapointed with this.
As a Cornwell, Scarrow and Igguldon fan I'm used to a more descriptive way of writing. The thought of having the landscapes of 16th century Mexico and beautiful Aztec cities described in detail was tantalising but ultimately came up short.
I found the narration a little quick also with very little gap between sentences to process what's being.g said.
I'll definitely persevere with series though as the adventure and historical setting is something I enjoy.

Interesting period

A good character and interesting tale. Sound quality wasn't consistent. I will look out for more in the series.

Fascinating and historically interesting

Great story of the Spanish discovery of and capture of the new world - brought to life through an intriguing story with interesting characters and historical detail . Many historical figures woven through the story - can’t wait for the sequel . Well worth listening to.

A surprising inside look into the history of Mexico

I like traveling with Thomas the apprentice gunner from England all the way to the Caribbean in the early days of its conquest. The descriptions were fascinating and the narrator was pleasant to listen to.
