About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
A transformative guide to building more fulfilling relationships with colleagues, friends, partners and family, based on the landmark Interpersonal Dynamics ('Touchy Feely') course at Stanford's Graduate School of Business.
The ability to create strong relationships with others is crucial to living a full life and becoming more effective at work. Yet many of us find ourselves struggling to build solid personal and professional connections or unable to handle challenges that inevitably arise when we grow closer to others. When we find ourselves in an exceptional relationship - the kind of relationship where we feel fully understood and supported for who we are - it can seem like magic. But the truth is that the process of building and sustaining these relationships can be described, learned and applied.
David Bradford and Carole Robin taught interpersonal skills to MBA candidates for a combined 75 years in their legendary Stanford Graduate School of Business course Interpersonal Dynamics (affectionately known to generations of students as 'Touchy Feely') and have coached and consulted to hundreds of executives for decades.
In Connect, they show listeners how to take their relationships from shallow to exceptional, along the way offering time-tested strategies for giving feedback, negotiating boundaries and working through disagreements. Through stories of people navigating tricky moments in relationships - all based on real dynamics Bradford and Robin have witnessed or experienced - we see the six hallmarks of an exceptional relationship in action: authenticity, vulnerability, honesty, a willingness to ask for and offer help, a shared commitment to growth and an ability to deal productively with conflict.
Filled with relatable scenarios and research-backed insights, Connect will be an important resource for anyone hoping to improve existing relationships and build new ones at any stage of life.

Great exploration of how to make relationships work better
The two authors provide many examples of relationship growth, analysing what is happening, explaining why there are problems and then showing how the issues can be overcome. The concepts are simple but the examples illustrate and explore how the implementation of those concepts can be hard. I enjoyed it and expect to return to some of the examples. If you’re interested in this area, I also recommend Marshall Rosenberg’s Non-violent Communication.

What an amazing interpersonal journey.
I really enjoyed and found a lot of value in this book. The woods, meadow, and summit analogy works. I saw similarities with NVC but heard no references to it. I hope they can do another book called Connected. The narrators were excellent.

10hrs of the ‘Touchy Feely’ Course - a bargain!
A real privilege to listen to a Carole and David from the ‘touchy freely’ course at Stanford - essentially giving you The a sample of 10 hours of their teaching time.
I’m usually a little resistant to these type of books - there’s a lot of pop psychology around that over generalises or promises too much but the lessons are so important and the examples so incredibly relatable. It will help for relationships with friends, family and colleagues and although the course is nicknamed ‘touchy feely’ it’s definitely an example of where soft skills are definitely not soft. The feedback chapters are probably the most essential and applicable to work life in particular.
For me the audiobook is particularly valuable for the dialogue parts - being able to listen to these conversations and judge where each person might be going wrong and really being able to empathise with the point of view of each character.
The self learning part is probably easier to do from the book but it was that good I have just bought the hard copy as well and work through it chapter by chapter. But I Iearned plenty from just listening to this book all the way through first - and possibly more when being delivered by the expert authors.

Every Human Should Read this Book!
Informative and full of deep moments of learning. Beautifully read and illustrated by the authors and their personal experiences. A must read (listen) for anyone who wants to learn to communicate authentically and understand that you can say anything as long as you are on the right side of the net. I have a hard copy on my bookshelf for reference because I enjoyed it so much.
