Summary

Fantastic! Funny, satirical and well read!

I liked everything about this book! The vocabulary was a bit more challenging than normal, and there were some strong regional accents to contend with, so I wouldn't recommend as a first French audio book, but it was hilarious. I guess it helped that the protagonist was English, which allowed for lots of opportunistic (but good humoured) stereotyping that was particularly entertaining for a Brit listening to it. I loved all the strong characters, and I thought the narrator's different voices were superb. The relationships that developed between the central characters were also delightful. This is a real feel-good book, where the best in human nature always prevails, and the 'baddies' get their just deserts. Comedy runs through it like a stick of rock (slapstick at times), and it doesn't even matter that the whole premise for the story is a little thin. I didn't quite figure out why Andrew Blake thought that taking the job as a butler in France would allow him to put the ghosts of his past to rest - maybe I missed something crucial at the start of the book - but it didn't really matter. I'll listen to it again soon, and perhaps I'll find out second time around, or maybe there wasn't any particular reason! Would make an excellent film!

Sympathique

Loved it!!!!

I just chose the book to practise some French. The surprise has been quite big. The story is touching and very funny. The reader superb. The characters are tender and quite well played. It is a book that leaves you with a smile in your face all along the reading.
