About this listen
A novel written by the author H. Rider Haggard, the author of King Solomon's Mines and She. This book was first printed in 1889.
The story is set in the Ptolemaic era of ancient Egyptian history and revolves around the survival of a dynasty bloodline protected by the priesthood of Isis. The main character, Harmachis (the living descendant of this bloodline), is charged by the priesthood with overthrowing the supposed impostor - Cleopatra - driving out the Romans, and restoring Egypt to its golden era.

Henry Rider Haggard's wildly imaginative novels are very much a product of his fin de siècle era, laden with Victorian exoticism and concepts of adventure. Haggard's fictional characters have been referenced by Sigmund Freud and have inspired modern movie heroes like "Indiana Jones". Due to its somewhat stiff language (many "thou's" and "thee's), supposedly "transcribed" from papyrus scrolls, Cleopatra hasn't been as popular over the years as Haggard's novels She and King Solomon's Mines, but Brian Troxell's skilled performance manages to soften the audiobook's formal diction. The novel's eponymous heroine is just as compelling a character as Ayesha, a.k.a. "She-who-must-be-obeyed" in She.
