Summary

Véritable ouvrage dramatique, Claude Gueux met en scène la dure réalité des classes ouvrières dans les années 1830. Le personnage est ici victime du blâme de la justice contre ceux qui tentent de s'en sortir malgré leur vie difficile : condamné à l'emprisonnement pour avoir tenté de nourrir ses enfants, Claude Gueux se verra plus tard confronté à l'injustice criminelle des détenteurs du pouvoir.

Victor Hugo autopsie avec pertinence l'enfermement intérieur de notre prisonnier, et transcrit avec une parfaite justesse les sentiments haineux que ressentent les personnages. Considéré comme un écrivain engagé, l'auteur éveille les consciences à travers son livre, à propos des misérables conditions des ouvriers, et, tout particulièrement à propos de leur destin dramatique.
