Summary

In the small Irish town of Knockglen, best friends Bernadette ('Benny') and Eve are inseparable. Benny is an adored only child, and Eve, a poor, birdlike orphan brought up by nuns.

On their first day at University College, Dublin, a fatal road accident brings the pair together with fellow students Nan Mahon and Jack Foley, and new friendships are quickly struck. Jack and Nan introduce Eve and Benny to a life of excitement and sophistication. But beneath their carefree existence trouble is brewing for the circle of friends.

Warmth and laughter are interwoven with sadness in this compassionate and absorbing tale of friends whose lives, over a period of ten years, become entwined.

What a wonderful story! I loved it and have recommended it to several friends and members of the family. So funny, and warm, sad and touching. Benny is a brilliant.

Complete Circle - Binchy satisfies on all counts

Maeve Binchy has done it again, this is one of her better books and the audio version helps bring to life those characters who spring off the page - cosseted and somewhat suffocated Benny, in love with the faithless handsome Jack; Eve her best friend, ever staunch and reliable; naughty Nan - whose beauty captures the eye but not the heart. You can almost imagine the awful Sean, wringing his hands in 'Uriah Heep' fashion, such is Kate Binchy's excellent narration which brings this circle of friends (and foes) to life. A feelgood tale which yet portrays some of the trials and tribulations of young people growing up in less permissive times, with a satisfying and somewhat surprising conclusion.

Wonderfull!

Have read this many years ago and been very disappointed by the film version. This audio was wonderfull. The narration was superb and I have revived my faith in Maeve Binchy's "yarn spinning" abilities!

A truly beautiful story

The story charts the early blossoms of life from youth to teenage trials and tribulations of Benny. It is truly a beautiful and heart wendering story that simply touches you and one that I would definitely recommend. The reader takes you on Benny's journey with Eve, her best friend and Jack, the love of her life! I can and have listened to this story over and over again, a great purchase.

An easy listen

Would you listen to Circle of Friends again? Why?

Its a very easy book to listen too. not to complicated a storyline, easy to follow.

Any additional comments?

I would have enjoyed the book to have ended differently, I felt like the ends of the stories didn't really tie up nicely, I was very surprised when I realised it was actually the end of the book and not just the end of a chapter.

A fabulous holiday listen

Kate Binchey's narration never fails she has a wonderful knack of bringing the characters to life and making them very believeable. Whilst the storyline is fairly light it manages to hold the listeners attention to the very end.

My first Maeve story!

Absolutely loved this story, it throughly captivated me and I looked forward to hearing more each night.

I named my second born daughter Maeve and felt it only suitable to listen to a maven of literature and who she shares a name with, a try.

I’m glad I did!

I’ve found my new indulgence. I only wish that Maeve Binchy were still here to keep us captivated with even more brilliance.
