As if he doesn't have enough to handle between running outlaws out of Cheyenne, keeping his brothers out of trouble, and avenging his father's death, Sheriff Sawyer McCade's meddling mother just dumped a mysterious mail-order bride on his doorstep. One woman can be more trouble than a band of renegades, and while this one has him all stirred up, he'd rather get to the bottom of the story she isn't telling. Rose Parker had it all - until a web of danger and deceit sends her running to Cheyenne posing as a mail-order bride. Escaping the evils of New York seems sensible until she meets the unsuspecting sheriff who didn't ask for her, has no intention of marrying her, and won't rest until he uncovers her secret and sends her back home.

Beautiful and heartfelt
This is the first time I've listened to an audible book by Kathleen Bell and it won't be the last!
This story took on such a powerful countenance with narration. You could feel the emotions coming through as the narrator spoke. Julie Hoverson did a wonderful job as narrator.
You feel for the plight of our heroine of this book as she's finding out the hard way that no one is quite as they appear to be. Remember this is the Wild West not modern day. A woman has limited means of employment.
So much emotion and detail went into this story. At times I found myself with tears because you can feel the despair and sadness of our heroine. Poor Shannon, she tries so hard to be a good help mate. But will that be enough?
Cinders is a man full of regrets about love and marriage. He lost his first wife while she was with child.
He treats our heroine with indifference at times because he's an emotional mess. It's because of Cookie that he gets the "talking to" that kind of snaps him out of his emotional confusion. He gets his act together and starts in making amends to Shannon.
You need to keep in mind that the timeframe for this story is not now in modern times where we wouldn't hesitate to tell the guy where to go. This is during the times of the Wild West when women were property and didn't have a voice. There were very little proper employment opportunities for young ladies in those times. Being married was the only option for a secure and safe well being.

DNF - narration awful
The narrator made the females sound super whiny and the male lead sounded like a country version of Thurston Howell from Gilligans Island. It felt like I was a child being read a book by someone who liked to make the character voices over the top.
The story had a good plot, I just couldn’t listen to the narration after 20% in.

This was a beautifully written tale
I received a free audiobook version in exchange for a fair review!
I can’t wait for book 2! This was a beautifully written tale of the limited options women of the west had and the few wonderful men who made life worth living! The last thing Cinders wants is a new wife. He was burned by his first wife and her death in childbirth gave him a freedom he never wished to relinquish again!
But Shannon is desperate. She believes she is engaged to a ranch owner but is deceived by the unscrupulous saloon owner instead. When she refuses to marry him and his lies, she is not only shunned by the town (who all think she was previously a soiled dove) but also now outwardly scarred by the hand of her betrothed. Cinders comes in like a knight on a white horse and rescues her not once by twice. They end up married out of necessity and it seems like the whole town is out to get revenge on Shannon. Will Cinders give her a chance? Can he trust another woman? Can Shannon get over the feeling she is unlovable because of her hideous scar? You must find out in the Mail Order Brides of Texas series!
NOTE: There is a sex scene I skipped over since I prefer sweet and clean romance

Sweet story
I enjoyed this a very sweet story? I do love my mail order bride girls and this one did not disappoint as far as the storyline goes. I do wish the editor of this book was a little more mindful of the language used during this time period. For example "That would be great" most likely was not used. If you can overlook those little boo-boos it was enjoyable.

Good story but...
I really liked this story. As mentioned before, the author uses too many modern terms. If you’re going to write historical fiction you should at least try to using the correct style of language. The narrator is AWFUL. The tone of voice she uses for every character is wrong. They sound angry when sad, happy, being romantic, just about always. The only other tone she gives them is irritating like an adult coddling a toddler.

The Best!!!
The was one of the best stories. Of course I have enjoyed every audible by Kathleen Ball and the start of this series set the stage for many good stories to follow. Mail Order Bride Shannon, desperate to find her place answers an ad. But finds out the man was not who the rancher she expected but a cruel John Hardy who owned the saloon. When Shannon refuses to marry him, he slashes her face and tries to force her to become a "soiled dove" in his establishment. Luckily she is saved by Cinders, a handsome rancher. She ends up marrying him, just as a convenience to save her and she sets out to learn as much as she can to be a good helpmate.
Kathleen Ball is a master at setting the reading right in the middle of the story and you feel you are there. Times were often hard during these times, but Shannon is determined.
Julie Hoverson does a wonderful job with her narration and the different characters. A journey to find love unfolds and a lot of twist and turns along the way.. Perfect.
