About this listen

A disgraced college lecturer is found murdered with £5,000 in his pocket on a disused railway line near his home. Since being dismissed from his job for sexual misconduct four years previously, he has been living a poverty-stricken and hermit-like existence in this isolated spot.

The suspects range from several individuals at the college where he used to teach to a woman who knew the victim back in the early '70s at Essex University, then a hotbed of political activism. When Banks receives a warning to step away from the case, he realises there is much more to the mystery than meets the eye - for there are plenty more skeletons to come out of the closet….

The 21st novel in number one best-selling author Peter Robinson's critically acclaimed DCI Banks series.

Disappointing

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I was very disappointed with this book, I have all the Alan Banks books so far, so was really looking forward to this one. . I found the narrator very bland & boring, so much so that he nearly sent me to sleep! The Jamacian accent put on for Winsom was so ridiculous that I was almost waiting for a Bob Marley song to break out!
I thought the storyline was quite weak & nowhere near as good as previous books..Maybe a different narrator could have bought this to life better. . . .

What was most disappointing about Peter Robinson’s story?

Just not as good as some of the other DCI Banks books....

What didn’t you like about Simon Slater’s performance?

Bland, boring...didnt exactly bring the book to life...

If this book were a film would you go see it?

Probably not.

Any additional comments?

Neil Pearson would have been excellent reading this or James Langton . .

Up to standard

The usual great story - and very good narration - set in the now and the 70s.

Justice for one but not for all

I enjoyed the narrative and would recommend. I have read many Banks novels and look for each new one. I find the writing excellent. The story was interesting and had many twists and turns. I enjoy the way Banks interacts with his team and superiors in the Police and how he moves the case forward. I will not reveal the plot so unless you have finished the book the following will probably not make sense. I understand how Banks solved the mystery and why to save the innocence of one he did not reveal the guilt of another. However that does not sit well with me and in the end as at the beginning I feel Banks is another person to add to the list of those who have totally denied any justice to Mr Miller.
Would recommend the book to followers of Banks. I did enjoy it but could not reconcile with the unfairness of the ending to the original victim Mr Miller Im afraid.

A disappointment

Would you try another book written by Peter Robinson or narrated by Simon Slater?

I enjoyed Simon Slater's reading, but was unsatisifed by the plot line and conclusion. Peter Robinson's writing has been so much better. I won't give up on him though.

Would you be willing to try another book from Peter Robinson? Why or why not?

Yes I am, I have enjoyed all his books apart from this one

If this book were a film would you go see it?

Probably not, I much prefer to read or to listen

One of his best

I really enjoyed this book. The story was well paced and complex, and the ending very well done. The reader was excellent and I certainly will look for other things right by him.

Quite good but not brilliant

Fairly good listen but dragged in places and was a little dull. Okay for a long car journey but once was enough.

Long Awaited New DCI Banks

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The Reader

What was one of the most memorable moments of Children of the Revolution?

Don,t know cannot concentrate on the story

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Too slow, mono syllabic, no characterisation, does not hold the attention.

Any additional comments?

Most disappointed - if an abridged version with Neil Pearson narrating I would buy it immediately!

Back on form for Peter Robinson.

What made the experience of listening to Children of the Revolution the most enjoyable?

The story line is much better than recent Banks novels; it is actually believable and keeps you guessing.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Winsome; I love the fact that she is allowed to care for the underdog and still get results

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The performance improved as it progressed but the reader unfortunately doesn't have enough different voices in his repertoire and it often sounds like a character is sneering.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would have done but I don't have that many hours available in the day to do so!

Any additional comments?

Maybe the reader could try practising some new voices before he ventures into the world of audio books...

Long but not boring at the end

A very interesting story, but you had to get to the end to find it. A very long time to get there. Maŷbe-I found the 70s vibe a bit dated
