Scritto nel 1909, è l'ultimo racconto di Mark Twain, totalmente fantastico, e ispirato da una vera figura di marinaio che gli aveva narrato una avventura simile, nel 1866. La storia fu però tenuta in sospeso e rimaneggiata per tanti anni, finché, un anno prima di morire, la pubblicò su una rivista. Il racconto, sotto la consueta affettuosa ironia, propone comunque una visione ultraterrena coerente con le esperienze narrate dai numerosi protagonisti di NDE (Near of Death Experience), che a quel tempo non erano ancora diventate oggetto di ricerca scientifica, né venivano diffusamente divulgate.
