About this listen

When siblings Dan and Hayley Daley inherit their late grandmother's derelict Victorian farmhouse, it seems like a dream come true. All they have to do is fix the place up and sell it for a tidy profit!

Except - as anyone who has renovated an old house knows - things are never that easy.

The walls are rapidly crumbling around them, the architect is a certified lunatic, the budget is spiraling...and then there's the disturbingly intelligent cow to worry about.

On top of all this, the renovation is being featured on a daytime reality TV show, and as soon as Great Locations presenter Gerard O'Keefe catches sight of Hayley's first-floor balcony, he's determined to woo her out of her ban on romance, whether she wants him to or not.

Will Dan and Hayley survive and sell up? Or will the whole thing collapse on them like a ton of bricks?

From bestselling author Nick Spalding comes a hilarious tale of life, love, and dodgy plumbing.

I was really looking forward to this book but i just couldn’t get past the narration. I agree with another reviewer in that the voice was far too posh for the character. I very rarely give up on a book but unfortunately I have this time. Given 3 star review as wasn’t fair to give 1star when I haven’t listened to the whole thing.

Pat The Cow

Woman's voice was too upper class and totally different to her brothers!
And why have a female and a male narrator for them to narrate both lead voices very differently. Ruined the story for me and didn't finish it

Poor narration

Excellent tale from Nick, I've read them all and this has become a new favourite! Very funny in the way you expect from Nick and a good tale that's more interesting than the TV renovation shows. Only got the audio version by mistake but enjoyed it though the narration's not the best.

Another fine romp!

The narration was okay, but I really didn't like the pathetic voice the narrator for Danny puts on for women.

The story was relatively entertaining and it was an easy and fun reas. However, the ending was predictable and cringy to say the least. Nick Spalding should probably play to his strengths and focus on the humour rather than attempt to weave in a romantic storyline.

Good laugh, entertaining, disappointing ending

The art of storytelling is given this tongue in cheek, humanistic flavour by the author.

If you are a regular viewer of shows like Homes Under The Hammer, or the various self build or renovation shows, this is an eye opening, humorous behind the scenes exposé of what the cameras Don’t show and tell us! This is told in exactly the way I would retell any personal experience to a good friend - the embarrassment, the pathos, the frustrations, the worries, all of the human emotions surrounding a stressful event such as this! Never a dull moment, even in recounting the dull moments!

The two narrators are fabulous! You can’t fault them on any aspect. A great choice for the layout of the book!

My favourite character? Pat the Cow!

Just nailed my sense of humour on the head!

I laughed out loud more than once at this listen! Really funny story, great characters and well delivered by the narrator's. I've read Nick Spalding before - Fat Chance - and enjoyed it but this was my first listen. Well done! Still chuckling!

Such fun!

This had me really laughing out loud in places, so much so that when I was doing my workout and attempting to do pressups, I couldn't because I was laughing so hard. Really great, definitely recommend.

Genuinely Hilarious

It took me a good while to get my head around the robotic narration of the female, but eventually I did (listening at 1.25x speed made it a bit more tolerable!). I managed to warm to her character once I’d got used to the voice - but can fully understand why others would just give up! Once you get past that hurdle, it was a good book - really funny in parts, yet believable too. I’d recommend this - if you can’t stand her voice, then definitely read it instead :)

Good Story...
