Summary

After gaining valuable experience as an aide to Governor Lord Horatio Hornblower, William Brewer is rewarded with a posting as first lieutenant on the frigate HMS Defiant, bound for American waters. Early in their travels, it seems as though Brewer’s greatest challenge will be evading the wrath of a tyrannical captain who has taken an active dislike to him. But when a hurricane sweeps away the captain, the young lieutenant is forced to assume command of the damaged ship, and a crew suffering from low morale.

Brewer reports their condition to Admiral Hornblower, who orders them into the Caribbean to destroy a nest of pirates hidden among the numerous islands. Luring the pirates out of their coastal lairs will be difficult enough; fighting them at sea could bring disaster to the entire operation. For the Defiant to succeed, Brewer must rely on his wits, his training, and his ability to shape a once-ragged crew into a coherent fighting force.

Immersive Adventure On The High Seas.

A great insight into life aboard a British sailing ship of the line during peacetime following the Napoleonic wars. We follow the adventures of William Brewer as he crosses the Atlantic Ocean to America and then down to the Carribbean. There is internal conflict, secrets, lies, naval battles and admiralty politics. This is a very well written and narrated novel. I think the sound effects add to the atmosphere created especially in the battle scenes. A very enjoyable listening experience with a wonderful array of characters.

Truly dreadful. Forester must be turning in his grave!

I tried to like this, Lord how I tried. The beginning was tolerable, although the technical nautical aspects appeared a little questionable. To find our “hero” on a ship commanded by a mentally unstable captain; really? The Captain being swept overboard is hardly a departure from Captain Sawyer tripping over a coming and falling to an almost certain death as in Lieutenant Hornblower. The fact that Brewer takes Phillips under his wing, an officer who has been forced to “kiss the gunners daughter” is a sad rehash of Hornblower’s relationship with Midshipman Wellard in the same novel.
Captain Bush for some inexplicable reason has risen from the dead despite his explosive demise near Le Havre and is capable or expatiating remarkably quick advice given the period in question. I felt if I had to hear the word mentor once more I would die!
Hornblower has somehow moved from being a dour self obsessed saturnine stalwart filled will self criticism to being a “mentor” and all round good humoured fellow full of bon homie, one who prepared unquestioningly to put up with the failures is his fellow officers. Hornblower has taken Gerrard under his wing and he has served with him as Flag Lieutenant for years, preparing him for command and yet he hands the Defiant over to someone lacking in seniority and experience. Even A radical free thinker like Hornblower would not have done this. This is not the Hornblower as envisaged by Forester.
This is a novel written by an American who fundamentally misunderstands Forester and the character and nature or Britains greatest fictional Naval Hero and also manages to big up the US Navy whenever possible.

Loved everything about this book

Not my usual type of listening but my sister recommended it and I thought I would give it a try. I am so pleased I did. It was wonderful the story was complemented by the wonderful narration, the sounds of the sea, the creaking of the ship with the noise of the cannons was a great addition bringing it to life. I loved this book. Now onto number 2

A maritime marvel

A quite bracing naval tale if ever there was one. The plot is fast paced and very engaging. The individual characters are well honed with a few historical figures dotted amongst them. Keffer's writing style is succinct, conveying all the necessary information with an economy of words that, at times, seems breathtaking.

Nigel Peever's narration is truly exceptional here. His characterisation of the stuttering Dr. Spinelli and the young Lt. Phillips being especially noteworthy in my opinion. Add to this the use of sound effects and you can practically smell the pine pitch of the deck and taste the salt in the air.
