About this listen

Every day, we make hundreds of small actions without even thinking about them. Pulling out our smartphones, clicking the one-click purchase button, pulling down to refresh the social media feed, and more. Automatic actions that have become so deeply programmed into our lives that we don't have the chance to stop and ask ourselves a very important question: Do I actually want to do this right now?

This book is all about taking a step back, identifying the Twitch - the impulsive, unproductive responses we have to discomfort - minimizing those distractions, kicking the clutter, and doing more of what matters.

Alright

It's short, which I guess was intentional. A lot of books in this genre come across as pretentious and don't offer much practical advice for the average reader. I'm happy to report that this book didn't come across like that. I like that this book approaches the practical aspects of minimalism not just in terms of physical and digital clutter, but in the psychological impact that it is likely having on you.

Unfortunately I don't really think that the ideas are very well fleshed out. We get very little back-story about the author and little description about how his life has changed after it.

The book gives some practical tips, like: remove troublesome phone apps from your phone, turn off notifications, declutter your possessions, and avoid impulse purchasing.

A lot of the book hinges on the idea of the twitch, whereby we get impulses to improve our lives and advertising exploits that. The digital advancement in technology has allowed companies to prey on that to encourage us to spend more. I thought that this could have been way more fleshed out and scientific / methodical in its implementation.

I wouldn't say the book is bad, but if you've given this subject even a degree of thought and reflection in your own time, I don't think it will add much to your perspective.

Overall, not terrible, but way too short and I wouldn't spend an audible credit on it again.
