About this listen

Handsome Frank Rossi took Matty Gilbie away from her working class roots in East London, promising her fame and fortune. As his wife, she would be half of a power couple. But the Wall Street Crash puts paid to all that, and as Frank becomes more violent, Matty flees in the dead of night. Once home in Bermondsey, she goes into hiding, but Frank is on the move, determined to find her and get her back.

Much better than the silly title suggests

This was a really involved story, based on what could so easily have been reality. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Very enjoyable book

It was lovely to be taken back to years before my time, where my grandmothers voice spoke through the words of this book. The hardships people went through, the bully husbands and the lovely memories This book is well worth a listen If you still have grandparents? talk to them about past times uts amazing what they remember.

another brilliant read

I loved this sequel to Custard Tarts and Broken Hearts. I've learnt so much from reading these books and could hardly wait to carry on reading them. I hope there will be a 3rd book in this series to see what happens next to Matty, Nellie and their families

Enjoyable!

Not my usual type of book but similar to the type my Nan used to lend me to read when I was a teenager!! And I enjoyed it as much as those!! It wasn't edge of my seat, fast paced gripping stuff but it was very enjoyable & easy to listen to. The narrator was great, easy to distinguish between characters, great accents & conveyed the emotions well (singing was a little iffy but then it's a book not a record!! & didn't take away the enjoyment!)

Another great Mary Gibson story

Have read the previous Mary Gibson books so def had to get this, esp as Anne Dover narrating is superb - and I warmed to the familiar characters and liked the depth of the storyline - there were some twists interspersed throughout & I learnt alot about the history and health side of London in the 30's. The setting was different to some books of Mary's and I liked the authenticity of it all. It rang true both in stories and characterisation.
It was a change from a war time setting but still had the warmth of people pulling together. 5 stars
