Chaloner becomes embroiled in a desperate race against time to protect Clarendon, to discover the true identity of the beggar's murderer, and to save a blameless man from the executioner's noose.

This was my second Thomas Chaloner read and I enjoyed it very much. It is quite a long listen/read and there are many characters to enjoy. I still like the setting of London in Restoration England and I am accepting of style of Susanna Gregory plots – as convoluted as a small intestine. There is deftness of character and Thomas Chaloner has enough of Matthew Bartholomew in him from that other series to please those followers as well. I liked the humour when it came, and here needed amongst the deaths and gore. After the turkey bird in the first Chaloner novel expect to smile when the parrot arrives in this novel. I have a few niggles, but nowhere near enough to put me off listening/reading other novels in this series. (They already wait for me in my library.) I do long for a map/plan of the London of the time of the novel’s key locations and wish one/s were provided in the print copies of books or on the author’s website. (They really help in the Matthew Bartholomew series.) Second, the narrator/performer, very good as he is, does have a voice that shorter recording sessions might keep his great freshness. That said, nothing at all should hold listeners back from a rewarding listen.

The book is great and the performance is superb,
My only complaint is with the production. Hachette seems to not edit/thoroughly review its productions before publishing as there are several spots in this book (and in their other Susanna Gregory audiobooks) where the narrator mistakenly calls a character by the wrong name or mispronounces a word and these errors make it into the final draft.
Hachette if you need a Beta listener who can listen to audiobooks and spot these slip-ups let me know. Publishing an audiobook with errors is very frustrating because it’s the only way some people can read a book and we should have access to the same words as someone reading a print edition. It’s just an accessibility thing!

I really tried with this one, I was hoping for a different narrator or that he might have improved a bit since the 1st one but sadly I just find him difficult to listen to and my attention wonders. if he put more into it and could make people's voices different and less bored sounding it would be great. I'm sure his style w I understand be ok with certain types of books especially if they are shorter . It's a shame because the story's are good.

Susanna Gregory books send me to sleep. This one is as wordy, convoluted and boring as its predecessor in this Restoration series. If you want really good mysteries set in this period, try Andrew Taylor. His books are in an altogether different class.
