About this listen

When the exuberant president of Ng'ombwana proposes to dispense with the usual security arrangements on an official visit to London, his old schoolmate, Chief Superintendent Alleyn, is called in to persuade him otherwise.

Consequently, on the night of the embassy's reception, the house and grounds are stiff with police. Nevertheless, an assassin does strike, and Alleyn finds he has no shortage of help, from Special Branch to a tribal court - and a small black cat named Lucy Lockett who out-detects them all....

Despite some surprisingly dated attitudes (and the author’s visceral dislike of obesity) this is a wonderful story quite brilliantly narrated. Lovely to have a bit of Alleyn and his wife’s domestic life, her painting, plus a charming kleptomaniac half-Siamese cat. Wonderful characters as always and a real sense of the London village atmosphere of Belgravia. Really enjoyable

One of the best Alleyn

This was my third Ngaio Marsh story. I have to say that I am enjoying them. Philip Franks is an very good narrator. He may not get Allen's name right, but this didn't really bother me unduly. On to the next Ngaio Marsh

Some people might be offended by the language used ...it is of its time...the title is the clue

As with so many of Ngaio Marsh's books, I was
barely able to put it down from the first 'page'!!
If you love cats, then the extra relish and joy from the back-story of LucyLocket, makes it a cert. for the single book to take to a desert island for the long-running BBC radio programme!

A Fine Who-done-it and Charming Story

There are few better combinations than a book by Ngaio Marsh, read by Philip Franks
