Summary

This is a history of the King James Version of the Bible (known in Britain as the Authorised Version) over the 400 years from its remote beginnings to the present day.

Gordon Campbell, expert in Renaissance literatures, tells the fascinating and complex story of how this translation came to be commissioned, of who the translators were, and of how the translation was accomplished. The story does not end with the printing of that first edition, but introduces the subsequent generations who edited and interacted with the text. The present text of the King James Version differs in thousands of small details from the original edition. Campbell traces the textual history from 1611 to the establishment of the modern text by Oxford University Press in 1769.

Attitudes to the King James Version have shifted through time and territory, ranging from adulation to deprecation and attracting the attention of a wide variety of adherents. It is more widely read in America today than in any other country, and its particular history in there is given due attention.

This book helps to explain the enduring popularity of the King James Version throughout the world today.

Packed with historical information

I am a teacher of Theology and a Bible believing Christian- so this was up my street. The book gives you that thorough academic approach to the text and to history that academics often aspire to. If I wrote the thing I'd have focussed more on the spiritual experiential impact of a life of KJV reading. I day this because at times all the discussion on changing commas, introducing paragraphs can get a little tedious. I listened to the whole thing though in about 36 hours or less- so it clearly held my attention!
The sweep of history is immense from Jerome's Vulgate and the Septuagint to Luther the first English Bibles, to the endless editions of the KJV ( eg his treatment of the Schofield study bible was helpful and new to me). The new versions of the Bible (along with an objective survey of the many views and opinions on these texts). The Bible as literature and why such an approach is limited in the eyes of some scholars eg it is using a sword as a cup or a decoration! It's a sword: the sword of the Spirit (Eph 5). In the end I'm glad I listened and may get the hardcopy as there is so much info and beautiful quotes and I'd like to access them selectively. This is a Panoramic text that'll help you understand the landscape of Christianity past and present from the Bible- get stuck into the living and unchanging Word- and let the Bible work on you! It is God's Holy Word.
