Summary

Raising a tween can often leave you feeling like a parenting beginner all over again. Children in the 'between' stage seem to change almost daily, leaving many parents struggling to understand the child they once thought they knew so well. In Between, parenting expert and mother of four Sarah Ockwell-Smith uses a unique blend of the biology, psychology and sociology of adolescence as the basis for practical parenting advice that you can use to help your child through the transition from childhood to adulthood.

It explores key issues, including:

  • Why tweens can often be moody, rude, lazy and impulsive - and how to cope with their behaviour
  • What exactly happens during puberty - and when and how to talk to your tween about it
  • How to navigate friendships and romantic relationships in the tween years
  • How to encourage good mental health and body image
  • Managing screen time and avoiding common pitfalls
  • Supporting the transition to secondary school

Between also offers advice on coping with your own feelings as your child moves through this busy developmental period, and how to let go and give them wings to fly. The tween years can be a difficult period for parent and child alike, but your openness and support is key to building the relationship that you will have with your child for the rest of their life. Between is the handbook that will guide you across the bridge from childhood into adolescence, together with your child.

User friendly!

This is a very relatable book with good sensible evidence backed reasoning and strategies, and covering most of the likely scenarios in relation to parenting your ‘tweens’.
The author’s narration is gentle, easy to listen to and reassuring without being patronising.
Would definitely recommend (and already have done) to other parents of tweens who need some reassurance and guidance.

Excellent read for those ages that are rarely covered!

I had already previously read het other bold when my kids were younger. So happy this book came out as now I have 8 and 11 year old. She explains exactly how it is and how to deal with issue related to 8-13 year group.
A must read for every parent I would suggest!

loved it.

Perfect reminder of things I'd forgotten I knew, things I didn't know and things I don't even know I needed to know. I recommend this to every parent.

Food for thought

Get your head round tween behaviour with this book. Some things were very different to my own style but most things very applicable :-)

Great if you’re new to modern thinking

But nothing new in it for me. Most just rehashed from previous book with ‘tween’ added in. And things like explanation of LGBTQ+. Shocking for me that there are any parents that aren’t already aware of the material in this book but explained really well for those who aren’t.
