Côte d'Azur, 1956: Bernie Gunther arbeitet noch immer als Concierge im Grand Hôtel Cap Ferrat. Dort bekommt er unverhofft Besuch von Erich Mielke, dem künftigen Minister für Staatssicherheit in der DDR, der einen Auftrag für Bernie hat. Er soll nach London reisen, um eine englische Agentin aus dem Weg zu räumen - eine alte Bekannte von Bernie. Obwohl er selbst von der Dame betrogen wurde, hat Bernie keinen Augenblick vor, diesen Auftrag tatsächlich auszuführen. Stattdessen flieht er quer durch Europa. Immer auf seinen Fersen: Friedrich Korsch, ein Stasi-Agent. Die beiden Männer lösten 1939 einen Mordfall auf dem Berghof, Hitlers ehemaliger Residenz am Obersalzberg. Nun, Jahre später, muss Bernie erkennen, dass Hitler zwar tot ist, seine böse Macht aber immer noch wirkt...
