Magical

A magical bedtime story.
Slow to start but then the story unfolds and it's a great listen.

Slow but interesting

Slow to get into then a bit of action and a slow ending, which I felt could have been edited a bit more. The adventure is triggered by a sudden debt the family must repay. In order to pay this debt it's suggested that Merisande marries the neighbours son whom she is very opposed to and has a strong dislike for although I must have missed the full reason behind this. She runs away claiming the situation was a danger to her life and runs head on into a much worst danger within the land of the Elves.

This book is a mixed bag. It's not quite a romance, not quite full of action, more of a simmering mystery and had that kind of witches in the evil woods vibe. I did struggle during the times when not a lot was happening, when Merisande was waiting around for information or for someone to get back to her. I also felt the ending was a little disappointing since a large part of the story relied on a big event happening which never did, and there wasn't any logical explanation for it not to go ahead. It ended in a way that suggested a sequel. I hope in book 2 the action/adventure is more prevalent and the romance is realised.

Overall I liked the backbones of the story. I would say this was an interesting book and worth a read, but know that it's a slower paced book.

I was given this book for free of my own choosing and voluntarily left this review.

Slow to start but worth the wait…?

It took me a long time to get into this book, but once the story gels, it becomes more engaging and the plot then moves along at a brisk, adventure filled pace. It is a book that is probably more suited for younger readers… in terms of content and style of writing as well as the narration, which is reminiscent of a teacher reading to a class of young children.

Thoughtful

This book is about two young people who become involved in an adventure neither of them would ever have suspected. It would not have occurred to either of them as they were unlikely allies. The story develops as they discover a shocking truth and attempt to escape to warn their people of the danger.

The story line develops well and the characters develop throughout. The narration is good except where she begins to whisper and at that point one must listen very carefully to catch the context.

This book was provided free of charge with the expectation of an honest review.

story within a story

The book felt like a slow burner at first, but damn did it escalate! lots of adventure and action - I especially liked a side story of a white doe that was weaved into the main storyline. Lovely book - highly recommend!

Enjoyed this book

I’ll be honest it took me a little bit of time to get into the story, however once I got the hang of the characters I really enjoyed the book. Really good at creating vivid images of the story in your mind. Narrator also did a great job

This book started a bit slow it took me a bit to get into it once I did I couldn't stop listening to it. There were so parts to this book. I really enjoyed it. It had a very captivating story and was well written. I'm really looking forward to what happens next in White Bird. The narration was excellent too Krista fantastic job.

Beneath the Roots

The story moved along at a good pace not rushed, although I would have liked them to stay longer in the Fae land of Thorsault, as I found it very captivating.

Enchanting

This book was captivating. My favorite theme was the love story. W.K. Greyling has woven a beautiful love story that made my heart soar. A love story that was not shallow or contrived. In that, it was so refreshing.

I am eager for the next book. I want to know more about the hidden Fae Kingdom and their ultimate plan. I want to know about the lost civilization and what brought its demise. Are the inhabitants on the Isle of Aure going to be able to survive what seems like an imminent attack? What caused the creation of the cursed woods? What is the story behind the White and the red deer? Did the noble Fae, Gandel, survive? Will Merisande see him again? Is there any hope for the slaves of the Fae? Will the plague spread?

Here is a fantasy I can recommend wholeheartedly to the young and old. It is without bad language and is without sex.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request, and have voluntarily left this review. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

An original and fun fast paced novel

This story is the perfect mix of clear detail and plot speed so, while it creates beautiful imagery in your mind, it moves fast enough to keep you interested. It's an unusual story and it's fun and exciting. The characters are well developed and stay true to their personalities. The narrator's voice is pleasant and peaceful to listen to. I highly recommend this book! Looking forward to more from W.K. Greyling!

Enjoyable and original

This review is for both books in this series as I listened to/ read them back to back.
I initially started with the audio version of Beneath The Roots but just couldn’t get into it - there’s nothing wrong with Krista Nicely’s narration as such, it just starts rather slowly and my attention kept wandering. I then switched to the ebook and got quickly drawn into the story - once that had happened I could alternate between reading and listening and enjoyed both.
The second volume is narrated by Tim H. Dixon who I found easy to listen to right from the start - by then I was invested in the characters of course and wanted to see what was going to happen to them.
The story itself is at the darker end of the fairy-tale spectrum (think Grimm rather than Disney), there’s plenty of original elements in both the plot and world building, the characters are layered and interesting and largely manage to avoid the typical fantasy stereotypes and tropes (a few of those we all want of course!) and the whole thing culminated in a satisfying ending. Great stuff!

Fell flat

It started out with promise but the depth of characters and plot that I was anticipating never eventuated.
Over all the narration was fine, SPOILER!!!!.........

except towards the end of the book when for plot reasons, a new narrative device came into play that I did not care for.
