Story
Editors Randy Chandler and Cheryl Mullenax put the call out to horror writers and editors of extreme stories, the hardcore stuff that breaks boundaries and trashes taboos, the transgressive tales you can't "unread" (as Chuck Palahniuk says). Some of the stories you'll find here are loaded with very graphic descriptions of violence, sex, and depravities, while others may contain only one shocking moment of brutality. In others, the hardcore aspect may be less graphic and subtler than you might expect.

Midnight. Some call it the witching hour. Others call it the devil’s hour. Here in the graveyard, midnight is a very special time. It is a time when ghostly spirits are at their strongest, when the veil between our world and theirs is at its thinnest. Legend has it, that while most of the world is asleep, the lack of prayers allow the spirits to communicate under the cover of darkness, among the headstones, their whispers rustling in the leaves of the old oak trees. But if you’re here in the graveyard, you can tell yourself it’s just the wind....

Derelictions are horror stories told in ways you may not have encountered before. Something is missing from the silent places and worlds inside these stories. Something has been removed, taken flight, or been destroyed. Us. Derelictions are weird tales that tell of aftermaths and of new and liminal places. Each location has witnessed catastrophe, infernal visitations, or unearthly transformations. But across these landscapes of murder, genocide and invasion, crucial evidence remains.

Story
In the worlds of Steve Rasnic Tem, a father takes his son "fishing" in the deepest part of downtown, flayed rabbits visit a suburban back yard, a man is haunted by a surrealistic nightmare of crutches, a father is unable to rescue his son from a nightmare of trees, a bereaved man transforms memories of his wife into performance art, great moving cliffs of detritus randomly prowl the world, a seemingly pointless life finds final expression in bits of folded paper, a nuclear holocaust brings about a new mythology, an isolated man discovers he’s part of a terrifying community, and more.
Summary
Fans of cosmic horror will have much to sup on in these eight tales. The supernatural intrudes upon a wedding; a pier becomes the site of tragedy; a collapsed building is only the start of the nightmare for those trapped in the ruins; a scientist makes the discovery of a lifetime, only to find out that what he’s unearthed has dire consequences not only for himself, but for all of mankind.

Outstanding
Beneath a Pale Sky is a flawless collection of literary horror that manages to be emotionally complex yet unpretentious, cinematic yet grounded and beautiful yet foreboding. I adored each story and loved every moment; this is an outstanding collection of memorable stories and I give it my highest recommendation.

Enjoyed the book very much! I read a lot and find it hard to be surprised and these stories delivered on the twist you don’t see coming! One made me cry and I think that speaks for itself. Looking forward to more from Phillip.

Probably would have been good, but...
The first story had me interested in the characters and how the drama was going to play out, but the narrator is not good. There's a particularly pretentious quality to everything he says that just does not fit this type of work. He'd probably be fine reading off a set of Ted Hughes poems, but not this. The payoff of the first story wasn't really enough to make me want to sit through eight more hours of _that_ voice speaking in _that_ way. I may end up picking up a written copy to see what happens with "Wheel."

Horrible delivery of what might be good stories…
I should have been paid to listen to the two I forced myself to endure. Flat delivery, pauses at the wrong moments… of stories that may have been ok. The author should feel wronged.
By the book and read it.
