Summary
BEFORE THERE WERE PEOPLE, THERE WERE BEASTS...
The island of Ramoa was once lush and roamed by mighty beasts. Now though, it is home to barren and tamed cities, where nature is locked out and trouble is brewing.
When Kayla's beloved animal companion, a rare winged pangron, is stolen, she's determined to get him back. But to do so, she'll have to leave her city and journey into the wild and forbidden Beastlands.
There, she meets Rustus, an exiled young warrior, and Alethea, a healer desperately seeking a cure for a mysterious disease. As their quests unite them, they'll adventure across the lands they know so little about, leading them to discoveries both great and terrifying. Not least that the beasts they've always been taught to fear might not be so terrifying after all....
The first instalment in an epic new fantasy adventure series for readers of DRAGON REALM, FIREBORN and SKANDAR AND THE UNICORN THIEF.

An enchanting and exhilarating adventure through a world packed with brilliant characters and incredible beasts!
I stumbled across this brilliant adventure across the magnificent and beguiling island of Ramoa that follows three young characters whose very different lives come together after they are forced to venture into the wild and majestic Beastlands, where they learn that they need to join together and begin the same quest. I was instantly swept up in the story which is told chapter by chapter from the perspective of each of the three characters, Alethea, Rustus and Kayla, which I found to be a really clever way of getting to know each of them in turn. The contrast between the oppressive man-made setting each character leaves behind with the vivid, vibrant Beastlands is breathtaking. The plot is masterfully woven with mysterious and eclectic characters and seemingly endless twists and turns. The only things better than the human characters are the Beasts themselves, who come in all shapes and sizes, but are all magnificent! And this is not just an adventure story; Beastlands is also a subtle but poignant reminder to examine the way we look at our own natural world with all its equally incredible inhabitants. I found this audio version very engaging, the narrator is clearly as immersed in the wonderful Beastlands as you will be! If you listen to the end you are also treated to the author Jess French’s own description of all the Beasts you meet along the way and how she created them. I can’t recommend Beastlands enough and can’t wait for my children to be old enough to read it!
