I loved in the chapter on the withdrawal reflex (had not heard of this term before) where Luzivette Martinez (author) suggests many practices to replace this natural reflex (that, as listeners will learn, stems from deep emotional pain and survival mechanisms) with an approach that could actually lead to more secure attachments, and, therefore, can create true lasting connections. These aforementioned connections are what is really, truly at the heart of what so many of us actually want and need. These practices take work, but they are so worth doing to move on from that lingering sense of loneliness that does not seem to dissipate by itself but can only be replaced with TRUE connection (not social performance).
