Summary

As Tsh Oxenreider, author of Notes from a Blue Bike, chronicles her family's adventure around the world. Seeing, smelling, and tasting the widely varying cultures along the way, she discovers what it truly means to be at home.

In her late 30s, and as a mom to three kids under age 10, Tsh Oxenreider and her husband decided to spend a rather ordinary nine months in an extraordinary way: traveling the corners of the earth to see, together, the places they've always wanted to explore. This book chronicles their global journey from China to Thailand to Australia, Sri Lanka, Uganda, France, Croatia, and beyond, as they fill their days with train schedules, world-schooling the kids, and working from anywhere. Told with wit and candor, Oxenreider invites us on a worldwide adventure without the cost of a ticket; to discover people, places, and stories worth knowing about; to find peace in the places we call home; and to learn that, as the Thai say, in the end we are all "same same but different".

Having traveled the world as a kid myself.....

I found this book to be incredibly uninteresting. The family seemed to spend a lot of time on playgrounds. There was no story. There was a weak "soul searching spiritual quest" that didn't hold water. To top it off the author is a poor reader who drops her sentences and was rather monotonous. I was really looking forward to it too!

Wanderlust Mamas rejoice

This book spoke to my soul. Ever since I became a mother I have experienced the weight of the tension between home and adventure in my heart. Tsh so beautifully validates this tension and gives me hope that the two really can live in harmony.

Surprisingly Uninteresting

Like traveling to fascinating places with someone who insists you only look at her not very interesting family pictures. If you are hoping to learn anything about different places, or are hoping to hear enthusiastic accounts of traveling in those places, this isn't that kind of book. No interesting observations or insights at all.

Returning

I love the premise of this book, but I am returning it. I just can’t get past the narration. Are usually love it when the author is also the one who reads the book, but in this case I feel the book would’ve been so much better if it had been read by a professional reader. Instead of feeling like I was reading this book, I felt like the author was reading the book, which, of course, she was, but it felt as though she were reading it aloud as a student in a classroom. A beautiful narration would really have made this book enjoyable.

Travel writing at it's best!

This is the kind of travel writing that has you grabbing for your passport and and a cup of tea at the same time. I found Tsh though her podcast "The Simple Show." I have binged many of her podcast episodes and finally thought I need to see (or hear) her writing if I love the podcast this much. This book did not disappoint. I would recommend it many times over. Especially if you are a homebody who loves to travel.

I might be the only one who didn't love it.

I don't know what it was. I liked her, but something about the book bugged me. I can't put my finger on it.

Wonderful book!

I love this book - hearing the author read their own material is great and I just love her story! I can resonate with the wanderlust, traveling with young children. I love hearing her personal journey of finding what home in this world is. Easy to listen to and great story for those who have a itch for travel, especially those with kids. H

Travel and learn

I loved this book of stories of family, travel, highs and lows of visiting many countries in a year as a family. I started listening to this at my home in Texas and continued on planes and airports to the Middle East and back and finished it working on my flower beds in the front yard. I can't wait to tell others about this book.

Pretty dull for a book on travels

Nothing extraordinary about the author's travel. Nothing interesting in her stories except a quick run-through of a list of places she had been. No substance & frankly a bore.
