Summary

He targets the unfortunates that society has cast away, but this time, he picked the wrong woman.

Tim's a streetwise detective, investigating the death of a homeless woman on his turf. Paired with grizzled veteran Gabe, they have to determine if the murder is a one-off, or if something more sinister is afoot. The trouble is, Tim doesn't always play by Gabe's rules. Nikki's past made her strong. Survival has been her goal since she was a girl, and it's the one thing the killer never counted on. She'll need to use everything she's learned if she doesn't want to become his next victim.

Will the detectives overcome their differences and piece the grim puzzle together?

Will Nikki break the sadistic chains that bind her and exact revenge on her abductor?

Time will tell. But for now, she'll keep the killer...At Arm's Length.

"We handle the serious stuff."

Tim Morgan had several years experience with the police force but this was his first day as a detectives Memphis CID. Partnered with Gabe, now a jaded detective almost at retirement, the couple were set to investigate the body of a homeless woman, read several days. It was wasn't until reports of other missing homeless women began that the seriousness of the investigation became obvious and the hunt began in earnest for one one particular.
Written to deceive, the story is easy to read, the characterization reasonably developed if a little heavy handed, but take further life from the excellent performance by narrator, Joe Hempel. His reading adds enormously to the enjoyment of the story. This is a detective thriller which, although concerning very unpleasant topics, is not too graphic in detail.
My thanks to the rights holder of At Arm's Length, who, at my request freely gifted me with a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom. An enjoyable, non taxing read which builds it's thrills as it continues

Excellent!

When Nikki goes missing, her friend Ann reports her disappearance. Should be an easy first case for new detective Tim. His seasoned partner Gabe is jaded, and doesn't think much of the situation, but when it appears that more than just one homeless woman has been taken, things get much more complex. TD Parker takes us into this mystery and keeps us on the edge for the whole book! Twists and turns, we are captivated by the intricacies of the story. I love a good mystery, and this one was perfect for my afternoon listen. It's high suspense, just the right amount of creepiness and the idea of just how possible this is make it a fantastic listen.

Joe Hempel is an amazing story teller and he sinks his teeth right into these characters. He plays each one, knowing their personality and coming up with the voice that perfectly fits them. I loved his interpretation of each one and thought it was spot on. He gives an incredible performance.

Exceptional

"At Arm’s Length" (2019, 2021) is an exceptional novel about a kidnapped homeless woman, a rookie police detective trying to solve the murder of homeless people, and a sadistic killer. A well-written story told from multiple perspectives with interesting supporting characters, the story held my interest from start to finish. No flowery prose that made me roll my eyes. Instead, just spectacular storytelling. Joe Hempel’s talented narration adds to the drama well. Highly recommended. At my request, I was given this free audiobook and have voluntarily left this review.
