Nice and easy to read clean YA
First book in a trilogy.
Ellora Artemer is accepted to the most prestigious Aura School in the Realm despite failing her admissions test. Once there, she fears getting kicked out, finds friends, finds her place, and discovers that there are much darker things going on.
It never gets particularly dark, nor very deep. The plot keeps moving forward all the time, which makes it an easy and fun read. There’s some teenage drama and angst, but not much of it, mostly cute friendships. Other than the MC, there’s a gaggle of other students and several teachers, and I had trouble keeping track of who was who, as most of them, save Hunter, were quite undefined compared to the rest. Said Hunter’s secret is obvious from a mile off. I assume Ellora/Hunter is endgame.
This was an enjoyable read and a fun start to a series. It is clearly lower YA and contains no spice, merely a slight touch of teen romance. I’m glad the MC doesn’t try to solve everything on her own, instead she talks to her friends and mentors and they help her.
The cover is beautiful. The audiobook is good, though I find it strange to have an adult man reading a YA books with a girl as the MC. But that’s just me.
