About this listen
Arthashastra is one of the oldest books with immense historical significance written by Kautilya, or Arya Chanakya, as he was popularly known. This book is one of the most effective books ever written on the art of statecraft and the science of everyday living. Originally written in Sanskrit, this is the English translation of the book, and it highlights the role of government in the lives of people and the important responsibilities that it should carry. The book also speaks a great deal about economics; hence the name Arthashastra, which is the Sanskrit translation of the word economics, has been used.

Fascinating!!!
I’m so glad zI bought the first volume of this fascinating summary before hearing the ‘In our time’ discussion on the Artadhastra: I’ve just bought the second volume so that should tell you something.
The reading is almost perfect, and it needs an Indian voice, but he sometimes swallows syllable and occasionally mispronounces words, but he only lost me on one or two occasions when it was fairly clear where the author was headed.
The commentary - for that’s what it is - is clear and an absolutely riveting series of insights into the ‘reale politique’ of ancient India, but it carries more than a few hints about the heritage if it’s modern incarnation.
I thoroughly recommend the book.
