Editors Randy Chandler and Cheryl Mullenax put the call out to horror writers and editors of extreme stories, the hardcore stuff that breaks boundaries and trashes taboos, the transgressive tales you can't "unread" (as Chuck Palahniuk says). Some of the stories you'll find here are loaded with very graphic descriptions of violence, sex, and depravities, while others may contain only one shocking moment of brutality. In others, the hardcore aspect may be less graphic and subtler than you might expect.

A good intro to the series
- By Candice K Hardcastle on 15-06-21
Summary
now now adv. a common South Africanism relating to the amount of time to elapse before an event occurs. In the near future; not happening presently but to happen shortly
Baxter Zevcenko's life is pretty sweet. He's making a name for himself as the kingpin of his smut-peddling high school syndicate, the other gangs are staying out of his business, and he's dating the girl of his dreams, Esme. But when Esme gets kidnapped, things start to get seriously weird, and the only man drunk enough to help is a bearded, booze-soaked, supernatural bounty hunter who goes by the name of Jackson "Jackie" Ronin. Plunged into the increasingly bizarre landscape of Cape Town's supernatural underworld, Baxter and Ronin team up to save Esme. On a journey that takes them through the realms of impossibility, they must face every conceivable nightmare to get her back, including an odd brush with the apocalypse.

WTF
WTF is this book? It starts off slow, then jumps of the deep-dish of weird. If Quentin Tarantino decided to write a Harry Potter book, this would be it.

South-African mythology, gore and coming of age
Great story 4.5 stars from me! The narration was excellent, and the story itself was just at the right amount of fun action packed with horror sex and snapy comebacks. I loved that the story didn't take itself too seriously, without being unbelievablely absurd or farfetched. I didn't need to use any suspension of disbelief to enjoy it, and was surprised to find out at the end that the author somehow managed to incorporate within the story many interesting themes such as sexuality, Autism, mythology and more without me feeling it was shoved forcefully into the plot.

Needed South African narrators
I enjoyed the story but as a South African found the narration wanting. While the narrator's accents were not the worst attempts at South African accents I've heard. the pronunciation of South African names and terms was terrible, starting with mis-pronouncing the author's surname. Non South Africans will have no problem with the narration but South Africans will find the mis-pronunciations jarring as I did.

Surprisingly good story
I really didn't have a clue about this book going in having found it on a random search of the plus catalog. It turned out to be a surprisingly good story, with a good bland of dark humor, action and down the rabbit hole mythos and plot twists to keep it engaging all the way through to the end. Narrators did and excellent job of bringing the diverse group of characters to life. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

There are South African narrators! Use them!
I'm sure poor Charlie Human (pronounced he-mun) wrote something worth reading. I'll just never find out by listening to David Atlas butchering the South African accents in this book. My poor ears! It was like listening to Keanu Reeves' British accent in Dracula. Was it that hard to at least try and pronounce some of the names and surnames correctly? South Africa has many talented voice actors. Shame on Audible and Amazon for using a non-native to narrate one of the few South African books in their catalogue that wasn't written before the year 2000.

Unapologetically gritty and entertaining
I was taken by surprise. I started the book without reading the full synopsis of the story. And I have to say this series (two books only so far) is a refreshing take on magic that doesn’t constrain itself to the commonly expected happy fuzzy feelings. It’s raw and unafraid to go beyond whys expected and delivers and engaging story with welcomed adult humor and emotions.

Way too hard into the sex stuff
I thought the first 15 minutes of the book were interesting but as I listened further the whole smut and porn dealing highschoolers thing killed it for me. If the story took place in college it would have been more interesting and appropriate but since it isnt I am way too disgusted with the plot threads to continue. Grittyness is great up to a point but once you cross certain lines it becomes gratuitous and gross. Thank god I didn't actually buy this book and I got it for free from the included category. I will not be revisiting this series or anything from this author in the future!

R rated YA
This wasn’t for me. I made it about two hours into it and other reviews say it gets wild but I can’t take the emo story and the idea of a bunch of gangs running the school like a prison or the fact that they acknowledge it’s a digital world but they sell smut of stuff you could google in 2 seconds. Meh.
