Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Every life is both ordinary and extraordinary, and Logan Mountstuart's - stretching across the 20th century - is a rich tapestry of both. As a writer who finds inspiration with Hemingway in Paris and Virginia Woolf in London, as a spy recruited by Ian Fleming and betrayed in the war and as an art-dealer in '60s New York, Logan mixes with the men and women who shape his times. But as a son, friend, lover and husband, he makes the same mistakes we all do in our search for happiness. Here, then, is the story of a life lived to the full - and a journey deep into a very human heart.

Dull, uninspiring and superficial

I have persevered with this audiobook as it was highly recommended on a TV book show, however I have found it dull, uninspiring and superficial. There is little depth of character to the personalities and little feel for the times and places the novel is situated. The narration is the same, though fairly professional, it is also dull and boring, with awful pronunciation of the Spanish and French words.
I started listening to another book then tried coming back to this. That only made it worse, highlighting the contrast between the two.
Very disappointing. I won't be trusting recommendations from that show again!

This book made me cry...

I loved this book, but initially found the narrator a little distant hence the four stars. By the end I really felt that he had fully engaged with the story and by then I would have given him a full thumbs up! But this is actually how the book goes... it just takes time to get going and this comes across in the narration but be patient you will come to absolutely love LMS and live every moment with him. Another excellent book from this author.

Wonderful

This book has everything, it’s funny, exciting and so moving. I loved listening to each different phase of his life, not only telling stories of the last century but also how perspectives and feelings change in each phase of life. I was even waking up in the night to listen. Just wonderful!

An absolute masterpiece!!

I have always enjoyed William Boyd's writing but this has to be his finest. I had read it several years ago and had forgotten just how good it is. I found it so easy to relate to all the ups and downs of LMS's colourful life and, being now 81 years old myself, the last few moments of his life in particular felt both moving and poignant. What an absolutely stunning story and so beautifully read. A masterpiece!!

Everything and nothing happens, I both loved and disliked LMS, the main character...thoroughly enjoyed though couldn’t say why.

Great book, but

I’ve loved this book forever and it’s well read- a shame that the recording of the narrator seems to change quality/ become tinny at times, as if parts of the reading were recorded in different rooms. This was slightly distracting,

Dreadful narrator made listening a chore

Well written - I think - but ruined by the most boring, expressionless narration. Darren Boyd read in a flat monotone and at a speed that suggested he was racing to finish. Painful French accent, too. I disliked LMS, the main protagonist, intensely...but I'm not sure if that was a function of the writing or simply the narrator's delivery. The most poignant moments were delivered as if reading a shopping list. Is the narrator's surname a mere coincidence - or is he a relative of the author? If the latter, further proof that audio book narration is an art best left to the professionals.
I finished it simply by the dogged determination to do so. 14 hours... & a valuable credit... wasted.

A very dull past.

This is a very dull story, uninteresting happenings strung together. I did not get as far as the second part and would like to delete it from my library.
