About this listen

McLaren’s fiancée tragically died one month ago. Trying to heal emotionally from her death, McLaren settles into a rented farmhouse in the woods near picturesque Lake Windermere in Cumbria. But he’s barely had a chance to rest when Helen, the woman in the neighboring cottage, is killed…and is discovered near his front door.

Because McLaren had spent much of the previous day with her, and his snowy footprints lead to and from her house, he becomes the prime murder suspect in what the police label a frustrated romantic advance.

Motives for Helen’s murder are as chilling as the outdoor temperature. There’s the hands-on garage mechanic who’d like to put his hands all over her, the affluent fishing guide, and Helen’s former boyfriend who wanted to renew the relationship.

Can McLaren find the killer before the police jail him for murder?

suspect

Loved the narration from Callum Hale, who brings the characters, angst and suspense to your ears.

McLaren who is grieving the loss of his fiancée, rents a farmhouse near Lake Windermere , in Cumbria.
Rest is not on the cards as his neighbour Helen who lives in cottage next to him, is found murdered . He becomes the prime suspect.
Other suspects are around the garage mechanic who’d like to put his hands on her, the fishing guide, and Helen’s former boyfriend who wanted to get back with her. McLaren needs to find the guilty party before he is arrested and put into jail him for murder.

Stand out listen

With every listen I have to battle what I enjoy more, Callus portrayal of Mike McLaren or Jo's writing of Mike, together they have crafted a strong character who believes in justice and solves the most intricate of mysteries!

A well written plot with lots of twists and turns, without a doubt one of the best of this amazing series.

Confusing

A mistake to enter this series without listening to the previous ones. I was cofounder all the way through and couldn’t make sense of it till 15 minutes before the end.

Good Listen.

Another good listen from Jo Hiestand, this time Mike looking for some R and R to help him come to terms with Dana's death goes to Windemere to stay in a cottage. Far from the relaxation he craves he finds himself investigating a murder for which he himself is the main suspect. Great characters, twists and turns abound in the great read. Callum Hales narration once again is perfect as he voices each character bringing the story to life.
I was kindly given a copy of the book by the author and leave this honest review.

Great new series - narration worked so well

This was my first exposure to this series and whilst listening I regretted not listening to the previous books first as although I worked out most of it, felt that I would have gained more from understanding some of the backstory. However given that I really enjoyed it and it become addictive. The scene setting was brilliant and I could just imagine that I was there both in the Lake District and Morecombe Bay - that really did bring images of the poor people who died.

There were so many twists and turns that kept you engaged and loved the ending. The relationship with his friend Jamie was brilliant.

Looking forward to listening to more.

A powerful book.

Jo Hiestand has written a powerful book that is filled with suspense. It is emotional and intriguing, and has great worldbuilding. Callum Hale is, as always, a pleasure to listen to and his voice fits this series perfectly.

A review copy of this book was sent to me by the author. All of the above opinions are my own.
