About this listen

In 1350 the people of Cambridge are struggling to overcome the effects of the Black Death - and with a high mortality rate among priests and monks, the townsfolk are vulnerable to sinister cults that have sprung up. At Michaelhouse, Matthew Bartholomew is training new physicians when the body of a friar is found in the massive chest that the university uses to store precious documents. While investigating, Bartholomew stumbles across a derelict church being used as a meeting place for the mysterious sect he believes is at the heart of a web of blackmail and deceit - with intention to overthrow the established religion.

Quite a clever plot if you like gruesome but seriously marred by clownish voices. Totally unsuitable in many cases and the story largely shouted at the listener. Was relieved when it ended

Reader would be better with comedy

Superb choice of Narrator - I like the way he varies the voices and has kept the same Characters' accents the same as in the previous book.

Excellent Narration

A bit far-fetched but a well narrated story about 14th century England in the aftermath of the Black Death

Well told story

I was astonished I hadn’t reviewed this novel given that I’ve listened to the series multiple times.
The characters are wonderful, the plot a rollercoaster and the historical aspects give this murder mystery its colour.

All of the novels in the series are a delight and this is no exception.

Having David Thorpe read it is an added pleasure. He’s brilliant.

Thoroughly entertaining

I wonder if the plot line needs to be so complicated but wonderful characters make it a joy to listen. David Thorpe brings all the characters to life and Brother Michael is especially entertaining, I want him to be my best mate!

A right good yarn

I bought this after listening to the first book and really enjoyed it. I love the narration as it brings the characters alive and you can really see the book in your head. I wasn't as taken with the story as the first book, but none the less it was an enjoyable whodunit and a satisfying ending. Cannot wait for the next book.

An enjoyable listen

This novel is better than ‘A Plague on Both Your Houses’ which is good and if this becomes the trend then I will be very happy, The Matthew Bartholomew books are a comfortable read and I want to spend more time with them. The main character is more knowing in Book 2 though still fallible in his detection skills, - and Father Michael is more useful than a Doctor Watson and remains a favourite. The novel is full of incident and adventure which keeps things lively and the reader (me) guessing. I have purchased the third book in the series so that should give review readers confidence enough to enter the world of Matthew Bartholomew. [I get a bit picky with words and whilst ‘glowered’ is used minimally, the word ‘slick’ began to stick out in repetition.] The narration by David Thorpe is clear and sure with many of the characters well vocalised.
