Summary

November 1911. Lady Emily Hardcastle is celebrating her birthday by seeing a play at the Duke’s Theatre in Bristol with her maid and confidante, the inimitable Flo. Act One is a triumph. Then Act Two opens with a body on stage—a real one. One of the cast has been brutally murdered during the interval.

When other matters get in the way of Inspector Sunderland overseeing the case himself, he asks the ever-resourceful Lady H to keep a watchful eye on the suspects—and his police colleagues. Rustling up some cunning disguises of their own, she and Flo are soon in deep cover among the cast and crew, pulling back the curtain on some shocking secrets and rivalries…

The problem is, everyone seems to have a motive, and everyone seems to have an alibi…In this locked-room mystery in which nothing is as it seems, the amateur sleuths need to put on the performances of their lives if they’re to stand a chance of shining a spotlight on the truth…

Critic reviews

“Elizabeth Knowelden zestfully presents Bristol, England, in 1911.… Knowelden impressively conveys the nasty infighting of the cast, locals and gentry, and endless descriptions of mouthwatering food.… The lively banter, along with countless motives and alibis, keeps listeners guessing—often incorrectly. Historical trivia and occasional laugh-out-loud moments add to the fun, making audio a must.”AudioFile Magazine

Good but getting repetitive

I love this series, the storyline and plots are average ,but its the characters that makes the series so good and carry it.
In saying that, the main characters need to start growing a bit as nothing new is added to them . It's starting to get a bit repetitive

another corker

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, a brilliantly written story which adds another layer to our love of those characters, and Elizabeth Knowlden is as fantastic a reader as ever!

Lady H and Flo - familiar friends

Enjoyable and never predictable. Lovely to get to meet Gwyneth.

A not so local murder with a new cast of characters. You think that you know the culprit and then you confuse yourself. A gentle way to while away an evening.

Another winning romp

Superbly narrated. With clear affection for the main characters and depth given to the new.
A great story from Tim which places you front and centre of old Bristol’s theatre district and reminds you that village life too has its intrigues

At it again

Whilst the cherrie flo and Lady Hardcastle always bring a smile and their escapades are enjoyable I think this one was a stretch to far .

Up to the usual high standard

The characters are entirely believable. The plot is logical. It's a "ripping good yarn" as Lady Hardcastle might say.

Charming, but not as fun as previous books

This book is enjoyable, both Lady Hardcastle and Florence Armstrong are quirky as usual, but I found the plot a bit too thin.
In fact I thought the book was boring and not as engaging as previous ones.
The performance, on the other hand, was excellent.

Very entertaining

Superb narration, just the right tone and inflection of the characters throughout. Amusing anecdotes and witty women portraying the suffragette strength of the late 1800’s but without preaching or intensity. Loved the dialogue between the two main protagonists and their relationship which was mutually respectful and reflected their great friendship. A consistently good listen which cheered my soul. No foul language, no grisly descriptions of murdered victims, no sex, just a delightful listen.

Another wonderful installment!

I think this was the best book yet! This is my favorite lil cozy mystery series of all as well. Entertaining and heartwarming all at once. Of course by this point we've all gotten to know and love our dynamic duo quite intimately as well as having a wider cast of friends involved which adds to the fun. The setting of the theater was a nice touch as well. I also really enjoyed the addition of Flo's sister to the mix. Nice stress free entertainment as always. Also I'd be remiss if i didn't give a nod to the wonderful Elizabeth Knowelden for her amazing performance (per usual). She brings the story to life like no other could! Cant wait for the next one!

Another smash hit!

TE Kinsey has written a another absolutely delightful mystery, with our two favorite sleuths: the indomitable Lady H and and her feisty maid/friend, Florence Armstrong. Fans of the series will find many favorite foibles on display, such as Lady H using the wrong name so that Flo has to correct her, as Lady H gives her a dig for falling for her “mistake”. We see a lot of old favorite characters and also get to know Flo’s twin sister. The mystery was cleverly created and well-hidden from the reader. It wasn’t until the end that I could look back at the clues and put them together. All in all, a perfectly wonderful reading/listening experience!! (Kudos again to the reader! She’s brilliant!)

Amazing Ms. Knowelden

Ms. Kinsey writes most of my favorite books, they are intriguing, classic who done it and so many twists and turns.
No foul language, people are not hopping in and out of bed with each other/ just great reading.
I could listen to the eloquent tones of Ms. Knowelden read the plans for a rocket ship, she is amazing and my most listened to narrater.
