Story
Nisha has crossed oceans to give her child a future. Now she spends her days caring for someone else's daughter while her own waits for her return, half a world away. For Petra, it is only natural to hire a domestic worker to keep her house clean and her family fed. Their lives have nothing in common, except the love they feel for their daughters. Then one day, Nisha vanishes. No one cares about the disappearance of a foreign domestic worker, except Petra and Nisha's secret lover, Yiannis, the only connection to her daughter back in Sri Lanka.

Story
Swiv has taken her grandmother's advice too literally. Now she's at home, suspended from school. Mom is pregnant and preoccupied - and so Swiv is in the older woman's charge, receiving a very different form of education from a teacher with a style all her own. Grandma likes her stories fast, troublesome and funny. She's known the very worst that life can throw at you. Time is running short. Grandma's health is failing, the baby is on the way, as a family of three extraordinary women prepare to face life's great changes together.
Summary
Elena Alvarez is living a cursed life. From the deadly fire she accidentally set as a child to her mother's abandonment and now an unwanted pregnancy, she knows better than most that small actions can have terrible consequences. Yet when her grandmother calls and asks her to watch over the children of a recent widower in a small, isolated town in Colorado, she takes it as a chance to finally organize her life.
Instead, she is confronted by reflections of her own troubles wherever she turns - the recent widower and his two children adrift in a changed world, her own mysterious family history, and the interwoven lives within the town itself. Bit by bit, she begins to question her understanding of cause and effect, reexamining the tragedies she's held on to and the wounds she's refused to let heal.
But when the children go missing, Elena's fragile new peace is shattered. It's only at the prospect of fresh loss and blame that she discovers the truth of the terrible burdens we take upon ourselves, the way tragedy and redemption are inevitably intertwined - and how curses can sometimes lead to blessings, however disguised.

Without a doubt...
this is the most boring book I've listened to this year. It just drones on with the first-person narrator wallowing in all her bad life choices. I give up, I just can't care about her or anyone else in this story.
