Summary

"You don't know God." The church elder’s eyes locked on me from across the conference table. “He’s absent from your narrative.”

The room went woozy, and I struggled to bring my brain back online, managing to sputter, “God is the center of my narrative!”

But he wasn’t listening. He already had his story about me.

Here’s mine.

Critic reviews

“Natalie's writing is vibrant and deeply intimate. The innocence, honesty, and humor (seriously, she is so funny sometimes) that Natalie breathes into her storytelling makes All the Scary Little Gods both deeply personal and remarkably universal. If you have struggled with reconciling the harmful ways that twisted theology has entrapped you while simultaneously struggling to embrace the beautiful and freeing parts of your faith, this book will guide you.”—Tiffany Yecke Brooks, PhD, Author of Gaslighted by God: Reconstructing a Disillusioned Faith

“Natalie not only shares with us a clear understanding of her past trauma in poignant and sometimes even humorous vignettes, but she then brilliantly pairs those alongside her present view of God in a safe, inviting, and therapeutic method; this book is like a therapy session in a memoir.”—Emily Elizabeth, Founder of Thriving Forward

“What a journey. Thank you, Natalie, for taking us readers on such a heartbreaking liberation journey. Truly, the words in this book come from a bruised and wise sage who has lived through hell to speak to such heaven. All the Scary Little Gods helps me believe more deeply in the truth of the gospel.”—Dr. Andrew J. Bauman, Author of SAFE CHURCH

Truth

Wow, what honesty vulnerability and strength. Thank you for sharing. I am the child of a emotionally, physically and spiritually abusive marriage. You verbalised everything I've always known in the core of my being. Perfect LOVE casts out all fear. I am now 40 and finding my voice. Thank you x

Heartfelt and so uplifting

I couldn’t stop listening to Natalie’s book, and managed to get through it within a few days. Natalie’s book is a beacon of light for those that have grown up in the church where fear dictates over love. I loved listening to Natalie’s own personal stories around parenting, abuse in marriage and how she overcame those struggles.
I recommend this book to anyone who is struggling in their own marriage, church, or have experienced this in the past. There is hope and life after grieving and heart ache and Natalie sums this up beautifully in her book.

all the scary little God's by Natalie Hoffman

This book is incredible! I first stumbled across Natalie Hoffman 18 months ago after google-ing various resources on covert emotional abuse. My marriage and indeed my very person was in a desperate state and I couldn't put into words why? On the outside every box appeared ticked. Two healthy children, a working, seemingly placid amenable husband, a nice house etc etc but secretly I felt like I was losing my mind and felt very hurt and lost and alone in my marriage of 15 years. As a Christian I was compelled to read Natalie's first book 'Is it Me? Making sense of your confusing marriage' and then also read and re-read thousands of topics on the topic of covert mental and psychological abuse, financial abuse, covert narcissism and much more. I found Natalie's podcast Flying Free and literally binged for hours and hours listening, (many times sometimes repeatedly) to all her podcasts with various guests. I only downloaded 'All the scary little God's' a few days ago as I wanted to be able to stick my headphones in whilst on the go and listen as I went through my day. Also, I wanted to hear Natalie read the book as I love her delivery and it felt much more appropriate after listening to her so much anyway! Well I have devoured the book in 3 days! It is a wonderful, poignant, funny, heart breaking, wise and profound read. I loved every bit of it. It touched my heart and made me chuckle and sob in equal parts. Natalie is a gifted communicator! She is a woman who knows and understands so intimately the pain and desolation felt by being in a marriage with, and loving a man, who is quietly, systematically taking you apart piece by piece. Her story is one of triumph and love and I firmly believe God has chosen her to minister to, and help the many women who feel so alone and trapped in their emotionally and spiritually abusive marriages. Natalie is such a treasure and inspiration, who not only helps multitudes of hurting women, but also flies the flag for the true meaning of being a Christian and loving God! Emulating the truth of what Jesus taught us and showing the love of God in and through her work. Thankyou Natalie for this story, your story ❤️

The fact that God just wants a real friendship with us . Where did all the religious rubbish come from ?.

The word that comes to me first is ...Authentic .You won't find any religious guilt inducing content ... but compassion, sensitivity and acceptance wrought out of real experience ...
