Summary

A dramatic new Alien novel, as Weyland-Yutani seeks to recover from the failure of Hadley's Hope and successfully weaponize the Xenomorphs

With the failure of Hadley's Hope, Weyland-Yutani has suffered a devastating setback - the loss of the Aliens they aggressively sought to exploit. Yet there's a reason the Company has risen to the top of the food chain. True to form, they have a redundancy already in place...the facility known as "The Cold Forge".

Remote station RB-232 has become their greatest asset in weaponizing the Xenomorphs. However, when Dorian Sudler is sent to RB-232 to assess their progress, he discovers that there's a spy aboard - someone who doesn't necessarily act in the company's best interests. For Dorian, this is the most unforgivable of sins. When found, the perpetrator will be eliminated with extreme prejudice. If unmasked, though, this person may be forced to destroy the entire station...and everyone on board. That is, if the Xenomorphs don't do the job first.

Best Alien story - they should make this a film

This story was so brilliant, the plot and all its twists had me dying to listen to the next chapter.

Awesome

Focuses more on the company and how ruthless it is, really enjoyable. Not your standard xenomorph story but if you like the alien universe you'll love it.

Chilled to the bone

Cold forge is a great alien story, though I prefer the Tim Lebbon stories. my only real disapointment in a story like this is the alien or snatchers in this story really play second fiddle to the evil of the human condition.

Good but Grim

It was well written and fits well into the cannon. The story was gripping but not original. It just felt unremittingly grim at times. The characters were extremely hard to have anything other than contempt for and half way through I was rooting for the Aliens. Also a few too many internal monologues by unimaginative sociopaths.

A brutal, disheartening story, but well told

I have mixed feelings about this book. It's a departure from the usual Alien spin-offs in that there is realistic -- perhaps too realistic -- characterisation and a credible plot that involves more than just fighting the beasties. On the other hand, it's a brutal, depressing story, about a bunch of disreputable and dislikeable people, in a ghastly situation.

It probably isn't a spoiler, given this genre, to reveal that a bunch of people get eaten by the aliens. But the aliens aren't the only threat -- perhaps not even the most significant threat. Many of the human characters are even nastier and more uncompromising than the beasties. This is the only Alien-related story in which I rather hoped that the monsters would eat the whole damned bunch of them and be done with. There are certainly no heroes in this tale.

For all that, I found the story and the characters entirely believable -- it was sufficiently engaging that I was even distracted from the dubious science that underlies all these stories.

There's no doubt in my mind that, of all the Alien material since the original novelization, this is the best written, and most believable. But the end just left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Imagine reading Lord of the Flies but, at the end, rather than being rescued, Jack kills all the other boys in their sleep, for no good reason. It's a bit like that.

Good to listen to.

As a fan of Alien I thought this was an okay addition to the collection.

a good twist on the franchise!

Takes a while to get going, but then the third act really pulls you in - this could be made into a stand-alone film, which over laps with the events of the second film early!

Enjoy

Another great story from the Alien universe.
Narrator was good in that they didn't distract from the story itself, as can sometimes happen.
