Summary
A devastating hurricane. A traumatized teen. She made it through the storm, but what about the aftermath?
Fifteen-year-old aspiring filmmaker Jane-Claire Stevens believes her tight-knit beach community can weather anything. Little does she know disaster is indiscriminate.
The record-breaking hurricane raging her way wipes her beloved home off the map. Jane-Claire is adrift. Her family’s plans obliterated. Her own future blank.
The family is forced to separate. Her physician dad remains behind for his patients, and she evacuates with her mom and older brother to start from scratch in an unwelcoming city. Then, Jane-Claire discovers that her best friend is struggling in the dead zone. She sets out to help.
But before Jane-Claire can save anyone, she must first learn to trust and accept the healing kindness of strangers or risk losing herself in the wreckage.
Le Bas International has masterminded some of aviation’s more historic achievements. In the world of past disaster, no two relief events are ordinary following hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The company choreographed the largest civilian airlift since World War II. Seven thousand was only the beginning. Literally a drop in an ocean.
During the humanitarian mission, Le Bas International transformed problems of scarce supplies, limited resources, bureaucratic regulations, and basic security into a rescue opportunity.
Praise for the book:
"Based on a true story, Against the Wind: Jane-Claire's Personal Salvation is about the personal devastation of disaster. A strong subject for a young adult catastrophe thriller, the novel is full of touching, sharply observed moments and is a tribute to survivors everywhere.” (Tracey Deakin, founder and partner, Le Bas International Huntington Beach, California)
“Dawn Crouch has a passion for writing... And the most compelling stories are those based on life experiences.” (Scott Turner, editor and publisher, Albuquerque, New Mexico)

Moving and Powerful
Jane-Claire Stevens is a naïve fifteen-year-old with high aspirations of becoming a filmmaker. That is until a devastating hurricane hits her community wiping out everything she knows and loves. Along with her mother and brother, Jane-Claire relocates to a city that is less than friendly. Her father, a doctor remains behind. Feeling alienated in her new home, she discovers that her BFF is trying to survive in the hurricane-ravaged area. Bent on rescuing her friend and others, Jane-Claire tries to return. However, before she can save anyone, she must do some growing up and be less naïve, more trusting, and to accept help when it comes.
This book was action-packed, and filled with realistic moments of sadness, fear, frustration, and more. The author, Dawn C. Crouch, is magnificent. She captures the essence of the situation and people relaying their intense feelings expertly and accurately. She is gifted in painting a complete picture with words. Each character was well developed and held a significant role in the story. This story has stayed with me for several days now.
The narrator, Dana Miller, gives an exceptional and touching performance moving the story along smoothly. Miller gives each character a voice that reflects their personality, role, and essence. I thought her cadence was well-timed and kept the listener listening.
This is the second book I have listened to by Dawn Crouch and I was not disappointed! This is a powerful and moving book.
There were no issues with the quality or production of this audiobook, it was clear and concise.
