Summary

One hot summer's day, John Cole decides to leave his life behind. When his car breaks down on an isolated road, he goes looking for help and stumbles upon a grand but dilapidated house. Its residents claim to have been waiting for him....

There's Hester, their controlling host; Alex and Claire, siblings full of childlike wonder; the mercurial Eve; Elijah - a faithless former preacher; and chain-smoking Walker, wreathed in smoke and hostility. Who are these people? And what do they intend for John?

wonderfully written.

I will admit I struggled immensely to listen to this book. As much as Perry's writing is exquisite and there is not an author who could match her at present, I just couldn't fall for the characters. I think I will read the book instead of listening to it so I can view it with my own imagination.

Wonderful book with exactly the right narrator.

I loved this book and equally enjoyed the audio version. The narrator captures exactly the right tone.

Wonderful writing, but not engaging enough

This was a frustrating experience. She writes beautifully but I found it hard to engage with any the characters. It left rather a unfulfilled and uneasy taste in my mputh. I wanted to finish it but wasn’t really enjoying it, and yet the story had loads of potential.
