Summary

Adolf Hitler was a German politician, demagogue, and Pan-German revolutionary, who was the leader of the Nazi Party, chancellor of Germany, and führer of Nazi Germany. As dictator, Hitler initiated World War II in Europe with the invasion of Poland and was central to the Holocaust.

Hitler gained popular support by attacking the Treaty of Versailles and promoting Pan-Germanism, anti-Semitism, and anti-communism with charismatic oratory and Nazi propaganda. He frequently denounced international capitalism and communism as being part of a Jewish conspiracy.

Inside, you’ll learn about:

  • Adolf’s paternal and maternal roots

  • Joined the forces of World War I
  • Chancellor Hitler

Initially presiding over an oligarchic one-party regime that governed by plurality, Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili became the de facto dictator of the Soviet Union. Joseph Stalin raised funds for Vladimir Lenin's Bolshevik faction via robberies, kidnappings, and protection rackets. Repeatedly arrested, he underwent several internal exiles.

To eradicate those regarded as "enemies of the working class", Stalin instituted the "Great Purge" in which over a million were imprisoned and at least 700,000 were executed from 1934 to 1939. In 1939, Stalin's government signed a non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany. Germany ended the pact by invading the Soviet Union in 1941. The Soviet Red Army halted the German incursion and captured Berlin in 1945, ending World War II in Europe.

Interesting

The book also brings forth the fact that both Stalin and Hitler had many eager followers that often exceeded their orders in imposing terror and killing people. While this phenomenon does not absolve the evil dictators of their crimes it is also points out the darker sides of human nature that often come into play and, maybe, we should pay more attention to the latter forces than to whoever happens to be their leader. The modern parallel seems to be the excessive focus on bin-Ladden rather than the factors that make certain people flock to his cause.

Well

Stalin, and Hitler, Robert Gellately, the Earl Ray Professor of History at Florida State University, has written a sobering and chilling account of the unspeakable terror visited upon Europe, and indeed upon the entire world, during the first half of the 20th century.

The years between 1914 and 1945 witnessed World War I, the Russian revolution and the triumph of Bolshevism, the Great Depression, the dictatorships of the Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler, World War II, the genocide of the Holocaust, and the construction of the Gulag. Great listen.

A good time passed

An excellent book, the second volume in the series, whose great strength is in clarifying a key point often overlooked. Yes, Stalin was suspicious of others, but the Terror and literal destruction of much of Soviet governance was not because he was crazy or a "monster" but because he was a true believer, a dedicated communist who was, in fact, acting in accordance with communist ideology and the precedents set by Lenin. He did what he did in a fashion that demonstrated he was completely in control of both himself and the Soviet state - things happened when he wanted them to and they stopped when he wanted them to.

I would definitely recommend this book!

I've always wanted to about Hitler and Stalin to learn about them as men, but also what the world circumstances were like during that time to allow two such vicious and evil people obtain so much power. This book allowed me to do that without investing hours and hours reading multiple books on the subject. It did a good job of illustrating how they both came into power and compared their two different styles of ruthlessness. Even though it got a little tedious at times it was still a good read and I now feel I have a much better understanding of what they were like and what happened.

Superb

This is an excellent book on a difficult subject. With so many books on or about this subject it is always difficult to find one that covers it so comprehensively and especially as it is a truncated version of their biography it certainly does not seem so. Excellent information on Hitler's and Stalin early life and influences much of which I had not read about before all the way up to his last days in the bunker which is covered with good detail using sources close to the final days in the bunker. All in all a very good listen. Highly recommended.

The narration is awful

The story I am sure is very informative, unfortunately the narration sounds computer generated. Some harder to pronounce names/words are mumbled and the flow of the sentence breaks in random places. It is incredibly hard to absorb any of the information because of this.
