Summary

Please note: This is a novella, not a full-length work.

As Peyton returns from her family leave, following the death of her father, she wants nothing more than to get back to solving crimes. However, her first case, the double homicide of a prominent wine-growing couple, has brought back all of the despair she felt upon losing her father. Can Peyton put aside her own loss in order to bring justice to the Saint-Pierres?

Loved it!!

I want to write, "Peyton Brooks is back!!", but I technically can't. Before there was Peyton Brooks Mysteries and Peyton Brooks FBI, there was Peyton Brooks Homicide Detective and her lovely partner Marco. If you are familiar with these protagonists, this series features their stories before their careers took off. It even involves some of the beloved side characters (such as Maria, Cho and Abe) though many have yet to be introduced into Peyton and Marco's lives. Still, our dynamic duo are just as fantastic, despite being younger and a little inexperienced!

It is worthy to note something about this audiobook and this new series. As far as I know, this was written after the Peyton Brooks Mysteries and most of the Peyton Brooks FBI series. This means that ML Hamilton already knows what will happen to these characters but carefully wrote this book as though she lacked this prior knowledge. It also means that fans of these characters will be able to read (or listen) between the lines and understand the implications of certain events. That is not to say that a reader or listener must have this prior knowledge. This series appears to stand perfectly well on its own!

As always, Kelley Hazen gave a stellar performance in this audiobook. Our characters are back, sounds just as they should!!

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Early Days

I absolutely love Peyton and Marco as they solve murders. This was one of their cases from early days which I did suspect who was the killer fairly early but was good. Only complaint was so short wanting more but great narration. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you

A Great Listen

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the narrator and enjoyed it very much. As with all the other Peyton books, this book is suspenseful and action pack showing both the bad and good sides of society. It's fun to go back in time to tales of Peyton and Macro working to solve murders as new Inspectors. The author has a special talent to create characters and stories that feel real and the narrator brings every story to life. This combination of author and narrator creates pure enjoyment. This story is just the perfect length for a nice escape.

Love this author! Way too short a story…

You could basically guess the culprit at the very very beginning so this one was definitely not a mystery or some thing that kept you awake at night long after you were ready to stop listening for the day. Salts like barely a novella although it was very well crafted. Still worth a listen if you have an empty credit to use…

Another wonderful audiobook mystery

I always look forward to new installments of the adventures of Peyton Brooks and her friends. A Sour Grape: The Early Cases, exceeded my expectations, and it will exceed yours as well. I am anxious for the next installment of A Peyton Brooks Homicide: The Early Cases series. Hamilton plans to release each right before Christmas. As always, Kelley Hazen brings Peyton and her friends to life with her skillful reading and ability to give each of them a unique voice. Bravo

A Sour Grape

I just can’t get enough of Peyton and Marco, and this novella definitely appeased me. I loved getting a glimpse of the early days of their partnership, and I hope we get to hear about more of their early cases.

M.L. Hamilton has a way with words and I am never disappointed with her stories. I’m so invested in her characters and the more I hear, the more I want to hear.

I can’t imagine a M.L. Hamilton story without Kelley Hazen lending her voice talents. She’s consistent throughout her performance and there’s never any doubts about what characters are speaking.

Great Story

M L Hamilton and Kelley Hazen have done it again. Great short story and narration. I can't wait for more stories in "The Early Cases". The story flows smoothly and the narration emphasizes that.
