Summary
In the dead of night, Ayesha takes her daughter, Sabina, and slips quietly from her home, leaving behind a life of full of pain. Boarding a coach to London, all Ayesha wants is a fresh start. Hayden, a former popstar, has kept himself hidden away for years. He's only opened up his home to two people - Crystal, a professional dancer with a heart of gold, and Joy, an ill-tempered retiree with a soft spot for waifs and strays.
When Crystal asks Hayden if Ayesha and Sabina can stay with them, he reluctantly agrees and, as different as they may be, they quickly form an unlikely bond. So when enemies threaten their peaceful home, they will do all they can to save it and each other.
Uplifting and emotional, this is a novel of new beginnings, of discovering love and of finding A Place to Call Home.

Can't Stop Listening - Great Book
Where does A Place to Call Home rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is another of those books that once I started listening I was immersed in the story and have not switched it off all day.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Place to Call Home?
I am still listening to it but so far I loved the bit where she was welcomed into her new home by Crystal who is a great character with a big heart.
What does Rita Sharma bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
I am loving the narrator in this story. The story comes alive with the lovely softly spoken narration of a heart rending story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The very start gripped me when she had to get up in the middle of the night to leave home with her daughter who had not spoken due to witnessing the abuse of her mother by her father over a long period of time and the fact that the mum had taken some time to collect money from her husband's wallet to get herself and her daughter free this abusive home.
Any additional comments?
Give this book a try - I cannot stop listening.

Saccharine...
Too sweet and saccharine by half. The narrators voice was whispered and breathless...very annoying. I didn't even need it finish it but the ex husband angle lured me in

Great story - very well read
If you could sum up A Place to Call Home in three words, what would they be?
This is a modern, heart warming story of a woman on the run from her abusive husband. Ayesha and her daughter, Sabina, find refuge with a wonderful group of people, all living under the roof of Hayden Daniels, a retired pop star. Each of the characters comes to the house with their own problems and together they support and help each other.
What other book might you compare A Place to Call Home to, and why?
What I liked about this book it is different to other books I have read. I can't think of anything else to compare it to. The character of Ayesha is unusual and has different values to many modern British born heroines. I found the originality of this book refreshing.
Have you listened to any of Rita Sharma’s other performances? How does this one compare?
No, I haven't come across Rita Sharma before but I was very impressed with her reading of this book. Rita Sharma is perfect as the voice of quiet, gentle Ayesha, who is originally from Sri Lanka, equally good as bubbly dancer, Crystal and also as the voice of Joy an older embittered widow.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me both laugh and cry. Throughout the book there is a build up of tension I found myself really caring about the characters and wanting things to go well for them.
Any additional comments?
An uplifting, life affirming book.

Narrator was good with the female voices but...
Is there anything you would change about this book?
not so great with the masculine voices. Her narrative voice forthe lead male character made me cringe. Sorry, I just didn't like it as much as some of the other people who have read it.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Story was predictable and a bit saccharine.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The narration of the main character's voice was great.
Do you think A Place to Call Home needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Brilliant story and narration
This is probably the best of the Carole Matthews storylines that I have read or heard so far - all of which I have enjoyed. The plot is about a Sri Lankan woman fleeing with her mute daughter from an abusive marriage. The narration by Rita Sharma is brilliant which adds to the overall excellent rating. Highly recommend.

A bit sinister but a lovely story
I really enjoyed this book, it’s about a domestic violence victim that manages to escape with her daughter and falls in love with a millionaire recluse pop star (as you do...) it’s a bit scary as u always feel the sinister presence of her estranged violent husband in an otherwise sweet little story, throw in a lap dancer and a bolshy pensioner and bam! Top book x
