Summary
In the dead of night, Ayesha takes her daughter, Sabina, and slips quietly from her home, leaving behind a life of full of pain. Boarding a coach to London, all Ayesha wants is a fresh start. Hayden, a former popstar, has kept himself hidden away for years. He's only opened up his home to two people - Crystal, a professional dancer with a heart of gold, and Joy, an ill-tempered retiree with a soft spot for waifs and strays.
When Crystal asks Hayden if Ayesha and Sabina can stay with them, he reluctantly agrees and, as different as they may be, they quickly form an unlikely bond. So when enemies threaten their peaceful home, they will do all they can to save it and each other.
Uplifting and emotional, this is a novel of new beginnings, of discovering love and of finding A Place to Call Home.

Can't Stop Listening - Great Book
Where does A Place to Call Home rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is another of those books that once I started listening I was immersed in the story and have not switched it off all day.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Place to Call Home?
I am still listening to it but so far I loved the bit where she was welcomed into her new home by Crystal who is a great character with a big heart.
What does Rita Sharma bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
I am loving the narrator in this story. The story comes alive with the lovely softly spoken narration of a heart rending story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The very start gripped me when she had to get up in the middle of the night to leave home with her daughter who had not spoken due to witnessing the abuse of her mother by her father over a long period of time and the fact that the mum had taken some time to collect money from her husband's wallet to get herself and her daughter free this abusive home.
Any additional comments?
Give this book a try - I cannot stop listening.

Great story - very well read
If you could sum up A Place to Call Home in three words, what would they be?
This is a modern, heart warming story of a woman on the run from her abusive husband. Ayesha and her daughter, Sabina, find refuge with a wonderful group of people, all living under the roof of Hayden Daniels, a retired pop star. Each of the characters comes to the house with their own problems and together they support and help each other.
What other book might you compare A Place to Call Home to, and why?
What I liked about this book it is different to other books I have read. I can't think of anything else to compare it to. The character of Ayesha is unusual and has different values to many modern British born heroines. I found the originality of this book refreshing.
Have you listened to any of Rita Sharma’s other performances? How does this one compare?
No, I haven't come across Rita Sharma before but I was very impressed with her reading of this book. Rita Sharma is perfect as the voice of quiet, gentle Ayesha, who is originally from Sri Lanka, equally good as bubbly dancer, Crystal and also as the voice of Joy an older embittered widow.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me both laugh and cry. Throughout the book there is a build up of tension I found myself really caring about the characters and wanting things to go well for them.
Any additional comments?
An uplifting, life affirming book.

Narrator was good with the female voices but...
Is there anything you would change about this book?
not so great with the masculine voices. Her narrative voice forthe lead male character made me cringe. Sorry, I just didn't like it as much as some of the other people who have read it.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Story was predictable and a bit saccharine.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The narration of the main character's voice was great.
Do you think A Place to Call Home needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Brilliant story and narration
This is probably the best of the Carole Matthews storylines that I have read or heard so far - all of which I have enjoyed. The plot is about a Sri Lankan woman fleeing with her mute daughter from an abusive marriage. The narration by Rita Sharma is brilliant which adds to the overall excellent rating. Highly recommend.

5 stars across the board!
What made the experience of listening to A Place to Call Home the most enjoyable?
The narrator was fantastic, her range of accent was brilliant! She held your interest and the story itself was enough to keep you going
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Place to Call Home?
I can't pinpoint one particular moment, there were a lot of highlights but I don't want to give too much away!
What about Rita Sharma’s performance did you like?
Her ability to switch & change her accents was amazing, it kept you going and held your interest.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
A woman and her child make their journey to freedom (cheese alert!)

I considered not finishing this book a few times
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
As an audio book...only if they need to practice listening to a monotonous narrator with an Indian accent and all this without falling asleep; otherwise I'd recommend actually reading the book - not listening to it - as it is a nice and touching story. It does get a bit boring at times and the narrator makes even the happy scenes sound depressing. Very unilateral sound and speed.
Would you be willing to try another book from Carole Matthews? Why or why not?
Sure - with a different narrator.
Would you be willing to try another one of Rita Sharma’s performances?
hardly
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
probably not
Any additional comments?
I definitely recommend listening to to the preview. I'm almost sure that this audiobook is an 'either you like it - or not' - book. At one point I changed the speed of the narration and it still was surprisingly slow. On the other side I did want to know how the story would continue, which kept me listening till the end. The ending itself went by rather quickly (felt like 10 or 20 minutes...?) considering that the main part took hours of reading/listening.

Very Good Story, Excellent Performance
Where does A Place to Call Home rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This audiobook ranks highly among the many books I have listened to. The storyline was enhanced by the exceptional reading of the narrator who switched between dialects with supreme ease that made the story 'real' and brought it 'alive'.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Place to Call Home?
The narrator captured ones interest in the story right from the beginning of the first chapter as she described Ayesha and her daughters escape from a life of pain. I thought I could actually hear Ayesha's heart thumping!!
What does Rita Sharma bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
In the first chapter the hushed tone Rita used as she described their escape made me believe i was there watching & listening for the creak of the stair board. Rita's change between characters also made each of them real.
If you could rename A Place to Call Home, what would you call it?
Would never want to belittle the exceptional writing of the author by renaming her book.
Any additional comments?
Ive looked to see if the author has any other audible books....but alas...no.
Great book Carole Matthews...with love..!!
