Summary
Though Bernard wishes to use Annabelle to propel his family up the social ladder, his son does not wish to marry her, preferring instead to live the wild, single life he is accustomed to. With this, Bernard serves his son an ultimatum: marry Annabelle, or make do without family funds. Having no choice, Reginald consents, and enters into a hostile engagement in which the prospective bride and groom are openly antagonistic, each one resenting the other for their current state of affairs while their respective fathers revel in their suffering.
So begins an intoxicating tale rife with dark secrets, deception, and the trials of love - a story in which very little is as it seems.

Narration pool
Although the store was amusing I really disliked this narrator’s delivery. It is too studied and makes me think that I am being treated like a non native speaker.
Bring back Rosalyn Landor!

Mildly irritating delivery
Nice story with an interesting structure but the ponderous delivery was all wrong for me.

Mediocre story, awful narration
The story is okay although the characters seem quite one-dimensional. The narration however, is awful! The narrator sounds like a speaker system at a train station. «The. next. train. to arrive. on platform. three. is the. 15:43. train. to. Bristol.» Ruins the whole book!

Boring
In the second chapter you realise where this story is going. Then it is stretched out, to make it tedious.
The problem with Mary Balogh is, her books are either good or they are frustratingly disappointing.
