Summary
William Cobbett (1763-1835) had an interesting life as a soldier, fugitive, political prisoner, journalist, farmer, and in the end a member of Parliament. He began his political career in America and ended up becoming a Radical supporter in the UK. He advocated against the injustices he saw, saying he held "the politics of every normal person".
He had a number of radical ideas and set-up a newspaper to publish his articles.
This history book was published in installments in that newspaper between 1824 to 1826, when Catholic Emancipation was being ferociously debated. At the time it was a crime to say or hear Mass, or build a Catholic Church. Catholic Emancipation was finally achieved in 1829.
This book is composed in a lively and strong style and is highly entertaining. Although not quite exact in some details, it makes for a fun and edifying listen.

Masterful performance of a vitally important book
I cannot praise this book highly enough, nor the producers and narrator for bringing it into existence now, of all points in history, when more people than ever in the Anglo world are asking themselves "How did we get here? How did it come to THIS?" Well, William Cobbett's book will answer that question for you. Because this current crisis has been 500 years in the making.
While the book's style may not be the easiest for modern readers, it is well worth making the effort to understand, because its analysis is like a key that will unlock doors in your mind, and so much about English and US history and culture, previously a mystery, will suddenly become as clear as day. The narrator does a lot to help in the task of bringing Cobbett's often overwrought and bombastic prose to life, with lots of energy and emotion, to the point that you feel that the great contrarian himself is speaking to you. I felt the love in this production - once you 'get' Cobbett, you want to proselytise his message, and help others to understand the world as he did. And this production feels like this - that it has been produced by people who love this book, and want it to reach the maximum audience possible.
Finally, if you are in any doubt as to whether to go for this audiobook, consider this - this book, printed from the author's own printshop (he has previously been sued, imprisoned and exiled by the British Establishment for speaking his mind, so printed all his works himself), became a worldwide bestseller, and was translated into numerous languages. But in Britain itself, you would not know this. It was treated to a "dynamic silence" by the Establishment (whom Cobbett called 'The Thing'), who feared giving this book of great hidden truths any publicity at all, even to criticise it. Now where have we seen similar behaviour in modern times....
Anyone who loves history, who loves truth, and who wants to peer behind the veil of reality as it is presented to us, please buy this audiobook. It brings the words of the printed page to life, and is well worth a credit. To the book's production staff - more please! This was an absolute treat.
