About this listen

March 1820

When James Denis is arrested for murder and lands himself in Newgate, it falls to me to prove his innocence. I have nowhere to start but in a dark street in Seven Dials and the name of the unknown man Denis is supposed to have killed.

I soon find myself beleaguered by enemies from Denis’s past, secret societies, and a host of people who want Denis to hang. In addition I receive word from a mysterious young woman I haven't heard from in years who now seeks my help.

It’s regency crime nonsense with titled nobs and master criminals. I did really laugh when the hero is getting beaten up by thugs and admits his best defensive move was stamping on their foot ‘mostly by accident’. That’s about it for jokes though!

Daft fun

There is nothing to dislike, the characters, the story, the writing and the narration were just perfection!

It’s like catching up with old freinds

I have thoroughly enjoyed all Captain Lacey's adventures. I thought I'd heard all the historic mystery series but then I found Ashley Gardner's books. The adventures are really good and I never guessed the endings something I am usually good at. I love the characters and will really miss them. They are so real and she has built them so cleverly with lots of little details that make their lives really - well - live. I do hope it's not the end though I think it must be. The last one ended so neatly and happily. The narrator was excellent. He too helped to bring the characters to life. Ashley Gardner has a real gift!
Maybe I'll go back to the first one and listen to them all again. Big sigh! Feel sad now. Daft bat!

Amazing characters!
