Summary

A stunning atmospheric novel in the great tradition of Death on the Nile and Patricia Highsmith - tells of a young girl's journey on a cruise liner from England to a new life on the brink of the Second World War.

England, September 1939:
Lily Shepherd boards a cruise liner for a new life in Australia and is plunged into a world of cocktails, jazz and glamorous friends. But as the sun beats down, poisonous secrets begin to surface. Suddenly Lily finds herself trapped with nowhere to go....

Australia, six-weeks later:
The world is at war, the cruise liner docks, and a beautiful young woman is escorted onto dry land in handcuffs.

What has she done?

Easy read

The main character is frustratingly naive. The narrator is easy to listen to and brings personality to the characters.
I probably won't read it again but it was interesting. Although the ending is disappointing.

Very well written, very well read

I bought this book because it was on audible's daily deal and was a change to my usual listen.
The characters are well developed and the plot cleverly woven. The ending is also something of a treat. Heartily recommend.

Enthralling story telling at its best

If you could sum up A Dangerous Crossing in three words, what would they be?

Enthralling, breathtaking, realistic

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Dangerous Crossing?

Witnessing people's prejudices.

Have you listened to any of Katherine Manners’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I haven't but I will do now.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I felt I was there with the passengers and could feel the emotion as the story unfolded depending on the character we were focussing on.

Any additional comments?

It's one of the best books I've ever listened to. I loved hearing the different accents of the passengers and being able to identify with them all. I could envisage being on the ship and on shore. It was such a wonderful book, well written and well narrated and I highly recommend it.

Narration not to my taste

Narration was not to my taste, I found it very monotonous.
Story was fine, think would have enjoyed it more if I'd read this one.

Strange narration

I was quite surprised by the way certain names were pronounced incorrectly. It began to grate as one of the names was that of a main character.

Not worth the time

I found the book very boring. Listening to it reminded me of driving on the roundabout. The same thing over and over. The twist at the end wasn’t that exciting. I only listened to the end because I have another book on the go and this one was something to listen to at lunch breaks so it took forever to get to the end.
