Summary

On a misty Monday - 21st June 1948 - the MV Empire Windrush sailed up the Thames and anchored at Tilbury Dock, London. There were a total of 1,027 passengers on board with 802 passengers from British Colonies in the West Indies. Of these individuals, 539 were from Jamaica. The infamous images of the passengers walking down the gangplank the next morning would be the moment the Windrush Generation was born.

A Circle of Five reflects on the stories of the 300,000 or so making the same journey between 1948 and 1971 by showcasing the voices of five Jamaican women, Evelyn, Emma, Irene, Ivy and Melissa. Each woman tells their own story, all beginning in early 1930s rural Jamaica and spanning some 80 years. Through these women, the experiences of the Windrush Generation come alive, honouring this vital period in British history.

WINDRUSH & NOW

A accurate and relatable depiction of life for Black women in the UK. This book would make an excellent addition to any History or Humanities cirriculum. The women of the book give colourful insights to their struggles and triumphs.

I thoroughly recommend The Circle of Five.

The real Girlpower

I laughed and cried in equal amounts. These women are superheroes, in spite of all the odds with so much against you, you all became very successful in your own ways. If I walked for just one day in your shoes, I would collapse from exhaustion. I salute you.

Enthralling

Listening to this book reminded me of my mother's story as a Jamaican born doyenne in Britain who then left for Nigeria after her studies as a district nurse and having me.

These five women shared their stories with such deep aplomb that I got emotional as I recalled my late mother's stories too.

I couldn't stop listening to this book. I almost didn't choose this book, however, my intuition kicked in and I am glad that I followed it.

What a book! What a labour of love indeed! This book is cosmically enthralling to me. Thank you Harris Joshua for curating these powerful stories.
